5 Important Lessons Learned in My First Year of Blogging

Unbelievable! August 11th marked my one year anniversary of blogging. I can't believe it. Let's face it, I wasn't sure if my blog would last beyond a month or two. I certainly wasn't sure if my blog would still be here a year later. I wasn't sure I could find enough to talk about to last a whole year. But here I am.
Last year, I was sitting in my bedroom on the laptop, looking at Ree Drummond's blog when I saw the ad for Blogher on her site, as I'd seen a million times before. But this time I decided to click on it. And boy, am I ever glad that I did! That day, BlogHer changed my life.
My first post was untitled, "Mom Said This Was a Good Idea!" I called it that because my mother suggested that I start a blog. Mainly because she'd seen The Pioneer Woman on TV, and she thought that it would be a good thing for me to do, too. And as usual, mothers are always right!
I've read many blog posts where people share lessons that they've learned and mistakes that they've made. (That they vow never to make again.) Well, I would like to add a few of the things that I learned in my first year.
1. Just because you talk a lot, you can still run out of things to say.
You'll never run out of things to blog about... This is a bonafide lie! It really is! Before I started blogging, I thought that it would be intimidating. But, then I thought that I would never run out of things to say, because I talk so much. But, the fact of the matter is, that couldn't be further from the truth. Sometimes the idea well runs dry.
2. Blogging is hard. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.
It takes research and it takes a lot of work to bring interesting content to your readers. You can't just write anything you want. Each post is part of your business. You need to think about your posts and work to make them the best posts they can possibly be. Create your own style: you want people to able to recognize your words even without your name being attached. (Though your name should always be attached!)
3. Every idea should NOT warrant its own blog, but a blog post instead.
When I got started, I thought that every idea deserved it's own blog. Okay, well not every idea, but you know what I mean. I just couldn't stop creating blogs and blogging. Overblogging! It just wasn't good. I overdid it, tremendously. One thing that I learned quickly, moderation is key! Create one space and make it your space.
4. Don't get discouraged just because your blog doesn't hit it big from the get-go.
Frankly, this is a lesson that many bloggers have faced. It is a common problem. We all wish that our blogs hit it off quickly and make a major splash. But, the fact of the matter is that this very rarely happens. It takes a lot of hard work and patience. Trial and error. So, don't give up! Just keep blogging!
5. A blog is a reflection of one's self!
This is the line that describes my blog and what I am about. I feel that a blog is an extension of you, the blogger. It's important to keep that in mind. When people are reading your blog, they need to feel like they are walking into your mind or sitting across from you as you vent to them. And the great thing about blogging? Is that when you're venting in your posts, the reader can vent too, in their comments. Before you know it, it becomes a conversation. It's really amazing!
Frankly, I can't imagine myself and my life without blogging. I am in love with it! Blogging is definitely a challenge, but I must say that there's never a dull second. There's always a new concept, a new post to read, a blog to comment on, and a whole new outlook on blogging everyday. What a great community to be a part of!
So, here's to many more years of blogging!
