Times are tough, but that does not mean the decor of your home needs to suffer. Here are 10 ways to spruce up the look of any room on a budget.

1. Organize: stop and take a look at your space.  Do you have clutter? Can you see the top of tables, dressers and counters? Putting your belongs away and out of sight is a FREE way to upgrade the look of your space.  Using decorative bins to contain your belongs will add style and organization. It’s a win-win!

2. Paint: adding color to your walls will make a HUGE impression on the room’s look and feel.

3. Accessorize: check discount stores (like Marshalls, Home Goods or TJ Maxx) frequently for accessories such as candles, vases, clocks, wall art, rugs and bins.  Remember decorative storage bins have double duty, adding style and organization to your space.

4. Plants: add color to any room, use a great pot to add extra personality. There are great plastic planters by Better Homes and Garden that look ceramic, its an easy way to save without jeopardizing style. Some easy to care for plants are Ficus, Philodendron, Weeping Jew and Grape Ivy.

5. Throw pillows: give a fresh updated look to your bed or couch by adding throw pillows.  If you can sew give your old pillows a makeover and recover them in the fabric of your choice!

6. Memorabilia: put your memories to work by displaying memorabilia, books or photos on a shelf, frame or memory box.  Get them in unfinished wood at any craft store for under $20 and paint yourself, or make them yourself.  This makes it unique and easy to match your decor.

7. Wall coverings: use wall stickers, wallpaper or boarders to cover up less than perfect walls. This saves on the cost of re-plastering or repairing. They are easier than ever and come in a wide variety of colors, patterns and styles. Also a great alternative if you don’t want to bring out the paint can and brushes to add color to a room.

8. Drapes: frame your window don’t hide it! When it comes to windows less is more. Use a simple window curtain on each side of your window to give your space a polished look.

9. Hardware: changing or adding knobs, pulls and handles to cabinets/drawers/doors is a quick and cost effective way to change the look of any room. Outdated becomes modern. Country becomes contemporary. Check garage sales, swap shops and/or antique stores to find bargains on great and unique pieces.

10. Reuse: the best and most cost effective way to decorate on a dime is to reuse items you already have. Fill empty vases or candle holders with colored glass, sand & shells, flowers or wine corks. Use your imagination and you will find creative and unique ways to embellish your room with a style that is all yours!

If you like to create, then re-purposing items for other than they were intended can give you lots of decorating mileage. Look at everything in your home with new eyes and think out of the box, just because a potting bench was meant for your patio, doesn't mean it can't be used in your dining room as a very unique sideboard. It is the most cost effective way to not only refresh your space, but to add character to your home.

Just change lighting - either by replacing the existing one with something more interesting, or with adding one attention-catching lamp or chandelier. This will have an immediate effect.

I just made myself some fabric panels. Very inexpensive and very easy (all you need is a staple gun).
