Recently I challenged BlogHer readers to test their foodie experience on lists for the top 100 foods every omnivore (or vegan) should try. Now the lists have inspired other food bloggers to think about their own top 100 foods, and there's a second wave of must-try lists. Possibly no one could ever try all these foods in a lifetime, but wouldn't it be fun to try?
It all started with The Omnivore's Hundred, which of course led to The Vegan 's Hundred, but for vegetarians who aren't vegans, Barbara at Tigers and Strawberries now has a list of The Vegetarian Hundred, which includes a lot of my favorite foods like falafel, tahini, basil pesto and sweet potato fries. Even though I'm not a vegetarian, interestingly I've eaten a lot more foods on this list than than I have of the original omnivore's list.
The list-mania is spreading around the world. Diana at All Appetite for China has a fabulous list of 100 Chinese Foods to Try Before You Die. I've tried quite a few of these, but definitely less than half of them. If you want to try making some of these dishes, quite a few of them are links to the recipe on Diana's blog.
The list of 100 Japanese Foods to Try from Maki at Just Hungry makes me realize I don't know much at all about Japanese food. Since sushi is probably my favorite food, I definitely need to try more of these!
Finally for people in the United States, Emily at Slashfood has compiled an admittedly very subjective list of 100 Must-Eat American Foods with things like key lime pie, green bean casserole, and root beer floats. This is definitely the list where I've tried the most things, but there are things on this list I haven't tried like buffalo burgers and black and white cookies.
I'm betting there are more lists to come! I'd love to see a list for 100 Indian Foods, 100 Thai foods, or 100 Greek foods, to name just a few. Have I missed any other lists of 100 foods everyone should try? And which of these new lists has the most foods you've tried?
(Edit 9-16-2008) I just found this but I can't resist adding it to this post. House of Annie has now compiled a very thorough Big List of "Must Eat" Lists. If you love these lists, her list could keep you occupied for weeks!
