When each of my children was born, I spent much of the time in the hospital singing to them. For each one, I took an already existing song and adjusted it to fit only that child. Of course, their name fits nicely in the song somewhere.

Now, my grandies all love to hear the songs that I used to sing to their mama or daddy. The songs I chose were from many years, past, but they are all special.

I wrote a lullaby for my oldest:

GOOD NIGHT CHELSEA
GOOD NIGHT CHELSEA,
GOOD NIGHT MY BABY, IT'S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP...
GOOD NIGHT HONEY,
GOOD NIGHT MY SWEETIE,
GOOD NIGHT MY BABY, IT'S TIME TO GO TO
SLEEP....

She asked me to sing to her every night..., she 19 now, this brought back some memories, so THANK YOU!

I absolutely love "Ripple" by the Grateful Dead, but if I am going to be truly honest here, I would have to say that "The Wheels on the Bus" is the one song I have consistently sung to my son to get him to sleep. There I said it. Jingle Bells also worked when he was a newborn, but I think I have said enough. 8)

My favorite lullaby is actually called "Lullaby" by the band Creed. It is so sweet and soft. Let's give love to all. :)

My Mom used to sing Silent Night to me, as well. I know it is a Christmas song, but it is still one of my favorites and according to my Mom, it would put me to sleep.

I just had a humorous memory of the the episode of the TV show, "The Office". Jan, Michael Scott's ex boss and ex girlfriend, sings "Son of a Preacher Man" to her baby daughter Astrid as a lullaby. Not the song I would choose! LOL

Hi Nie Nie I saw you on the Oprah Winfrey show and I wanted to tell you that you are a remarkable woman. I admire your resilience. You and your husband have an incredible bond.

My favorite lullaby isn't really a lullaby, but it was sung to me as a lullaby and was very soothing to me. It is "Amazing Grace".

All my kids are older now, they are preteen, teen and adult.
We live 1200 miles from grandsons so don't get to sing much anymore but we always had a lullaby cassette we played after a bedtime song we usually sang

Brahms Lullaby

Lullaby and good night, with roses bedlight
With lilies o'er spread is baby's wee bed
Lay thee down now and rest, may thy slumber be blessed
Lay thee down now and rest, may thy slumber be blessed

Lullaby and good night, thy mother's delight
Bright angels beside my darling abide
They will guard thee at rest, thou shalt wake on my breast
They will guard thee at rest, thou shalt wake on my breast

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was the first song I could remember the words to when Oscar was a newborn. I was so tired my mind went blank. It's still what we sing to him every night.

My favorite English lullaby is the old favorite "Rock a Bye Baby on the Tree Top", but really the one I loved was in my native language of Marathi, a very melodious lullaby about the moon sleeping behind a tree.

When I was growing up my grandmother sang and old folk ballad to us now that I have grandchildren I sing it to them most people have probably never heard it as I am 57 but it is called the Ballad of Sam Bass I have 6 grandsons and they all have loved it over the years

My mother is from South America and she would sing "Duermete mi nina" to me when I was a baby.

This song is ridiculously weird, but it's tradition in my family. It's hilarious, but is still super comforting at bed time... Well, for me and my six siblings it was. :)

(It's also sung as a camp song, which is way faster and more upbeat...)

Down in the river to pray by Alison Krauss. Sang it to my belly to calm my sweet one down and it still calms her down as soon as she hears it.

I sang lots of songs to my first baby before she chose her favorite. Always, sing the Jesus song mama. Jesus loves me this I know... When my second baby came along, I continued the standby. And now, I often lie in bed with them both, now 8 and 3, and sing it still. Over and over.

Just last week, my mom heard me singing it to them. She told me that's what she used to sing to me as a baby. I didn't even remember consciously. But apparently, the song made a lasting impact.

My 3 year old always requests Mary Poppins "Stay Awake" (which I can attempt to sing) or the revised Hush Little Baby by Sylvia Long (which I just recite):

Hush little baby, don't say a word, Mama's going to show you a Mocking Bird.
If that Mocking Bird should fly, Mama's going to show you the evening sky.
When the night time shadows fall, Mama's going to listen for the cricket's call.
As their song drifts from afar, Mama's going to search for a shooting star.
When that star has passed form view, Mama's going to read a book with you.
When that story has been read, Mama's going to bring your warm bedspread.
If that quilt begins to wear, Mama's going to find your teddy bear.
If that teddy bear won't hug, Mama's going to catch you a lighting bug.
If that lightning bug won't glow, Mama's going to play on her old banjo.
If that banjo's out of tune, Mama's going to show you the harvest moon.
As the moon drifts through the sky, Mama's going to sing you a lullaby.

It's a retake on the old Mockingbird classic and I love the simple, nature, love based nature of it.

I really only sing songs that I make up. I am not a singer, so when I do sing I am being goofy or playing with my kids. I wish I could sing.

I have sung You Are My Sunshine to my 7 1/2 month old since he was born. Whenever I sing it, he smiles wide & bright. It calms him when he's upset and when he's sleepy, it helps him fall asleep. I love that we have this. It's not the same if someone else sings it. He doesn't react the way he does to me, his mommy.

"You are my Sunshine"...my grandmother always sang it to me and even though I can't carry a tune in a bucket..my kids loved it when I sang it to them.

As they got older, my husband would make up silly songs to sing to them at night. They loved the one he made up about our dog Bailey:

Baily bear, Bailey bear, sitting there without a care, in her underwear, because she's a Bailey Bear.

Oh where oh where is that Bailey bear, who's sitting there, without a care, in her underwear...oh she's over there!

Oh Nie,
My favorite lullaby is a classic....I loved to sing it to my little girl when she was a baby and every once in a while I still get to sing it to her.
You are my sunshine is simple and loving.

I'm not sure of the title, but I always sang "I Wish I Was" to my babies as they fell asleep:

I wish I was
an apple on a tree
I wish I was
an apple on a tree
If I was an apple on a tree,
my own true love would take
a bite of me,
I wish I was an apple on a tree.

I wish I was
a squirrel with a big long tail...

My dad used to sing Scarlet Ribbons (made famous by Harry Belafonte) to me. It is one of the most beautiful, touching songs I've ever heard, and it still makes me cry. I had the Kingston Trio version played at my wedding for the "Dad and Daughter" dance.

LeahK 5 pts

Ooh, one thing I've been asked NOT to sing anymore (now that the kid is old enough to understand words) is "Shankill Butchers," by the Decemberists. When Dad's not around, though, I still hum it. :)

LeahK 5 pts

My son has an easy go-to song (since his name is in the title), but following that, I love to sing "You Are My Sunshine" (what my dad used to play for me on his harmonica when I was little) and "Baby Mine" from "Dumbo."

LeahK 5 pts

I LOVE this one. We've had that up on YouTube a lot lately!
