11 Things To Get Rid Of In 2011

Interesting prompt today. What are 11 things you don't need in 2011, and how will you go about getting rid of them?

This, for someone who is slow to let go of clutter, is a scary one.

However, I've recently realized that my emotional attachment to some things is much lower than it used to be, and my tolerance for clutter, also lower. My kids are getting older. This is an excellent combination, though not if you're a toy-story level sap and think giving away old raggedy ann dolls and fisher price play houses is bad.

Meanwhile, I think you need to do this too. Take the challenge - what eleven things don't you need in 2011?

Trash_c 1. 10% of the kids' books - kids' bookshelves need to be purged, now that the youngest is reading competently. There are some books I have been holding onto just so she has things that she feels confident about reading. Seeing as how she can successfully navigate through chapter books now, and I have a huge selection of picture books I simply *can't* get rid of, I think there's a middle ground of easy readers I can purge. I have recently done this with the grown-up books in the house, though I think I could do some more. Not easy readers for adults, though that would be funny. Just regular books.

2. Speaking of grown-up books, when I did the family room bookshelves a few weeks ago, I made a pile of "might be worth something" books. They are mental clutter. By the end of January I need to either list them on Amazon to resell or just DONATE the darn things. I tend to hold onto things too long thinking I can wring a few more dollars out of them if only I could sell them, but honestly, I need to let go sometimes. (However I welcome your tips for resale as I do have a number of other things on this list that it sure would be nice to actually make a buck or two from.)

3. Jog stroller - craigslist or buh-bye.

4. Same for the Schwinn tandem bike stroller. Note to self: Teach the 7 year old to ride a two wheeler, she has confidence issues and fear that she needs to overcome but she'll never overcome it if we don't spend the time out on the driveway on the bike.

5. All the crap over my desk in the kitchen. I've been on a big purge streak this last week, literally have spent all week cleaning off that desk some of the kitchen drawers. I could probably do a better job of the whole "a place for every thing and everything in its place" business if I had some SPACE in the HUGE cabinets above the desk. Now they're jammed full of, among other things, a box of paperwork that is at least 7 years old, ever bubble envelope I've ever received that I thought might be reusable (I can keep those but they don't have to be stored so centrally), a bunch of old video tapes from the video camera that I hardly use anymore seeing as how all our cameras and phones can record video, blank greeting cards, thank you notes, a bucket of sharpies and permanent markers, a number of pieces of cameras, I even found a small 35mm camera up there which I've already put in the giveaway bag. Time to let it all go, particularly while I'm in this "pitch it or donate it" mood, I've learned over the years to take advantage of these fleeting moods.

6. 5 lbs. 'Nuff said.

7. The Lego Mindstorms RXT robot that I got for DS with the best of intentions (used on ebay last year) but which we've never been able to get the software working for and which is not supported by lego anymore and which he just doesn't show interest in yet. Next year when he's old enough for the Lego Robotics team, maybe, but...sigh. Not this version since it's out of date.

8. The old Dell laptop, a Windows 95 machine, and all the video games

Does she loan out? Because sometimes just having someone else there to chat with and double-check "can I get rid of this?" or "will I ever need this?" with can be really great.

Good luck on your own personal purges, I don't look forward to the time when we'll be going through our parents things. That's going to be really hard.

One room, corner, section at a time. feels REALLY good to be through some of this, though I know I still have much to do. I take before/after pictures, too, just for my own personal satisfaction (maybe I'll share some at some point. I have some great ones of the desk before I started hacking at it. :)

Thanks, and just do it! You don't have to commit to all the scary stuff, if it's the kitchen you need to purge, make a list of 11 things from the kitchen - a certain drawer, a cabinet, even a corner of the counter. Good luck!

Some of us are just not meant to grow things indoors! My cats get into the plants that I don't kill.

Thanks for the suggestion on the tech recycling. My county does a few programs a month for old tech recycling, I just have to look up the dates and locations. After I purge that stuff, sigh.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

My accountability points for today - in spite of spending money at Wally World (new socks for one child, undershirts for the husband, and household consumables) I did manage to go through the daughter's closet and remove many things she has outgrown. I unearthed pajamas she had forgotten were there (and are now perfectly sized for her) and removed the ones that were three inches too short in length. I also did her bookshelves, which is where most of the easy readers and such were located, easily removing 10%, maybe more since there's now actual open space on her bookshelf, which is hard to believe in my house.

Tomorrow I need to do a similar level of purge in my son's room (point of note: they did participate in the purge in part, though I did most of the work. I do think it's important for them to learn how to evaluate whether they have outgrown something either physically or mentally.)

Making the list *totally* made this happen, as I might have just read this afternoon instead. ;)

I'm also a clutterer but I did inherit it from both sides of the family! I have been slowly going through stuff from my Mom's over the past 2 years and getting rid of some things. She died 11 years ago. Some of this was stuff from my grandmother who died over 20 years ago.

I'm with Jenna, if I blog about it then my best friend will hold me accountable. Hubby doesn't read my blog. He says then he has deniablity. Pbbfft!

Truthfully though I need to go through my office and garage. I'm sure I can find more than 11 things.

My best friend usually shows up about twice a year and ruthlessly forces me to go through all my piles. The woman is heartless without a sentimental bone in her body! She then actually forces me to buy organizational stuff and use it too.

I really need to go through our closets. I'm sure I'll find way more than 11 things in there. *scary*

Try paperbackswap.com for the books. (They don't have to be paper backed - and they'll take both kids books and adult books).

I've been thinking about this for awhile now and I'm a little afraid to make my list... I think I'm going to find a lot more than 11 things.

Oh, gee. I might have to blog this myself. But then my husband would read it and I'd be held accountable to actually GET RID OF STUFF.

Weep.

I love this post and your ideas. Thank you for the push. :)

...but I do know I want to get rid of my rather sad attempt at a windowsill herb garden. It doesn't sound like much of anything, but I was really invested in the idea of having one. And after three failed attempts--failed because of everything from fungus gnats to small pots--I'm only more invested in some ways.

Still, the plants have clearly given up. I'm the one who's holding on to an idea...

Also, about your old computers, in Portland we have Free Geek ( http://www.freegeek.org/ ). Maybe you have something similar in your area...? Do you know anyone who takes in apartment-abused plants? ;)
