USA TODAY OwnIt

  • When your kid's studying history from the '80s ... the 1980s.

'80s mixed tape

  • "Here's your change, ma'am." (Or any sentence involving the word "ma'am.")
  • Justin Bieber
  • The day you realize your child is more technologically advanced than you are
  • Unearthing a thong in your undies drawer from your dating days
  • Any "Girls Night Out" that ends up devoted to conversation about the kids (and makes you oddly sentimental about Jell-O shots)
  • The moment you utter the words "Because I'm your mother and I said so!" Poof! Old.
  • Forever 21
  • The week before you're due at the salon for your dye job
  • When the kids think your wedding video is a laugh riot –- and you can't blame them; chances are your up-up-up-up-updo was visible from space
  • Reaching the next age bracket for surveys/polls
  • Yelling at teens in the neighborhood to stop speeding
  • High school/college/any reunions
  • When you're both too tired for sex
  • Carpool

And 15 Things That Make You Feel Young

  • Sleeping late
  • Tinted moisturizer
  • The photo retouch button
  • Going on the swings at the playground with the kids. Bonus points if you still fit down the slide.
  • Teddies (the kind you wear)
  • Blasting the stereo when you have the house to yourself (Blasting Barry Manilow –- not so much)
  • Popsicles
  • Zumba
  • Little old ladies
  • Dancing next to little old ladies in Zumba class
  • Fruit smoothies with wheat grass shots and/or doing Jell-O shots at PTA meetings
  • Watching Glee
  • Fooling around in the car/at the movies/anyplace that's not your bed
  • Your fave pair of jeans, the ones you still fit into
  • "I can't believe you have an eight-year-old!"

OK, what makes you feel old/young?

I am only twenty. I couldn't help but chuckle at #3. Justin Bieber. The first fifteen I am very familiar with...my mom is fifty. Loved your post!

I don't mean to hijack your post but I just turned 40 and this is so perfect for me! (I somehow manage to make everything about me). I loved this!!! This is what I did, maybe you will like this one too :)

I keep thinking I'm "supposed" to act or feel "my age" and it just doesn't seem to happen, mainly becuas eI hvae no idea how some one my age is supposd to act anymore! My mother definitely did not act like I do at my age (and she is a youthful 65 now). I figured out I'm probably about 3 years past daisy duke shorts and ten years past eating anything I want without repurcussions...but after that??? My kids get VERY unhappy if I say anything about Mama is too old for that, whatever "that" is...blue highlights, bikini, ogling that kid from the vampire movies :)

Old:
when your 38-year-old friend says she feels old ... sigh

24inmymind 8 pts

Old: When you have to scroll - and scroll - and scroll to reach your birth year on one of those dropdown birth year lists. Would it kill them to put those things in ascending order?

Young: Wait a minute.... I'm still scrolling...

Ohhh, the age bracket. It's evil. I don't have children of my own but i would have to agree with your list whole heartedly :D

Btw, are they *really* teaching children about the 80s in history class?? I think i just aged an extra 5 years when i read that.

my friend always tell me that we should always grow old gracefully and be young at heart always. Growing old is good, but feeling old... not always.

Old:
Being called Sweetie by the waitress.
Having grandchildren taller than me.
Sisters with wrinkles.

Young:
Coasting down a hill, standing on the pedals of my bicycle.
Blowing bubbles with the grandchildren.
Strangers wondering which of my sisters is the oldest (there are six of us, I'm second in line.)
