16% of most kids' diet? SUGAR
Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.
I just read this piece and it scares me. Yes, I can control what my kids eat at home, but A) it's still too much sugar and B) I can't control what they eat outside the home.
Trust me, I have tried to keep their sugar intake at school to a minimum (more for their brain than anything else) but my daughter's school gives out candy as a reward. I've talked to teachers, purchased non-candy "treasure boxes" (rewards for the classroom) and even had a talk with a doctor about writing a note to say my daughter was allergic - just in hopes of getting them to stop giving her candy.
So, what are we to do? Homeschool solely for the purpose of avoiding candy? That wouldn't work either. I have a horrible sweet tooth and am a bad hider...
But seriously, isn't this number scary? Sixteen percent of daily food intake?
