Talk about timing! National Rum Day is tomorrow, Saturday, August 16, 2014! You could spend the day or the weekend celebrating the yumminess that is rum. Step away from the tired-but-true rum and coke and try on the Devil’s Seam, Tiki Screwdriver,Old Fashion Reserva Exclusiva, Kingston Negroni, Watermelon Passion, Caliente Daiquiri,a low-cal mojito, and check out the new rum from Chef Alex Garcia.

1 1/2 oz. Appleton® Estate V/X Jamaica Rum
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. demerara syrup (2-1 sugar to water)
Dash of orange bitters
6 to 8 mint leaves
Shake & double strain ingredients over fresh ice into a highball glass and add champagne, garnish with a mint sprig & serve.
Old Fashion Reserva Exclusiva
2 ½ ounces of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
1raw sugar cube
3 dashes Angostura Bitters
Splash of club soda
Place the sugar cube in a large tumbler, or Old Fashioned glass, and drench in the bitters allowing the sugar to dissolve a bit. Add the orange slice and muddle all of the ingredients together. Fill glass with ice and top with the rum, stir and a splash of club soda. Garnish with an orange slice.
Dew Rum Runner
1 oz. Shellback Silver Rum
1/2 oz. Malibu
1/2 oz. Midori
1/2 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice
4 oz. Mountain Dew
Cherry for Garnish
Orange for Garnish
Combine ice, rum, liqueurs and pineapple juice in shaker and shake well. Strain ingredients over fresh ice into large glass. Top with Mountain Dew and garnish with orange and cherry.
Hurricane Passion Punch

Two 33.4-ounce boxes passion fruit juice (about 8 cups)
One 46-ounce can pineapple juice
3 cups light rum
2 cups fresh orange juice
2 cups dark rum
1 cup grenadine
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Orange wedges, for garnish
Maraschino cherries, for garnish
Mix the passion fruit juice, pineapple juice, light rum, orange juice, dark rum, grenadine and almond extract together in a gallon-size container. Chill until ready to serve. Pour the punch into a large punch bowl for serving. Serve in glasses filled with ice. Garnish with an orange wedge and a maraschino cherry.
Phusion Spicy Gimlet
Created by Privateer’s mixologist, Kevin Martin (former bar manager of Boston’s award-winning Eastern Standard Kitchen & Drinks)
2 oz. Privateer Silver Reserve Rum
1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1 oz. Simple Syrup
1 slice Jalapeño
6 cilantro leaves
Small pinch of salt
Combine ingredients into a mixing glass, add ice and shake until properly chilled and diluted.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a smacked cilantro leaf.
Heat can be adjusted by adding more or less jalapeño.
1 ½ oz. Bacardi Rock Coconut Rum
½ oz. Blue Curacao
½ oz. Lime Juice
2 ½ oz. Hard Rock Pina Colada Mix
Garnish: Pineapple wedge, lime wedge speared, mint sprig
Shake all ingredients without ice. Pour into ice filled glass.
2 oz. Copacabana 1940
0.5 Canton ginger liqueur
0.5 St. Germain elderflower
3 lime wedges
2 dashes few brothers bitters
Tablespoon of pear purée
Muddle limes and shake everything. Pour over ice in mini pilsner. I would garnish with pear fan but orange slice works.
White, Pineapple, Splash of Soda
1.5 oz. Captain Morgan White® Rum
5 oz. pineapple juice
1 oz. soda
Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in the Captian Morgan White® Rum. Top with the pineapple juice and splash of soda. Garnish with a lime wedge.
2 parts Skinnygirl® Sangria
1 part light white rum
Apple slices, diced
Orange slices, peeled and diced
6 fresh mint leaves
Mix sangria and rum over ice. Add in diced fruit. Stir, garnish with mint leaves and enjoy!
