Voting for the 2007 Medblog Awards ends tonight, January 20, at midnight so you'd better hurry over and vote. If you have no idea who you should vote for, let me give you some background on the women who have been nominated in each category. Some you probably already know - others are going to be new to you - all of them are fantastic bloggers.

11 blogs by women (23 by men) were nominated in six of the seven categories. That's not bad, but it's not great either.

Best Medical Weblog

Diabetes Mine - Amy is a long time BlogHer member who has been blogged by BlogHer editors more times than I can link. If that isn't enough to convince you of her worthiness, you should also note that she came right here to BlogHer and asked for your vote with her very own blog post on BlogHer. If that still isn't enough to get your vote, check out her latest post: Just Call Me Your Highness.

It's happening again. The unexplained highs. Going to bed at 84, and waking up at 184 a few hours later -- even after eating two buffalo burger patties with cheese and salad for dinner. WtF?

I MUST be fighting off a cold, although I don't feel any symptoms. I'm using my PMS temp basal to offset this latest bout of SUS -- Sudden Unexplained {blood sugar} Surge. But I am baffled and furious at the same time.

Best New Medical Weblog (started in 2007)

Dr Val and the Voice of Reason is a Revolution Health blog and it feels like Dr Val's been there forever. Who knew her blog was started in 2007? It feels like she's been there a lot longer than that. Dr Val has attended BlogHer Con and worked with BlogHer on a podcast about Postpartum Hemorrhage. Here's a link to a recent post from Dr Val: Was I poisoned?

A coworker (we'll call her Tina) approached me yesterday for what she called "pseudo medical advice." Apparently she had gone to a local sandwich shop with a friend, and purchased some bottled water to compliment her deli item. As the two sat down at a table and prepared to have a leisurely lunch, Tina twisted off the water top and took a big swig.

To her horror, she had taken a large gulp of what tasted like lemon soda instead. She checked the plastic bottle - it was marked as pure water. She instantly recalled that the bottle top had come off rather easily and she heard no characteristic suction noise as air first entered. She was gripped with fear - could this be a poisoning? Did someone tamper with the bottle to inflict harm on unsuspecting victims?

Another woman in the New Weblog category is new to me and I've been enjoying her blog for a little more than a week. Suture for a Living is a blog with an odd mix of "sewing" entries. You jump from posts about quilting to posts about plastic surgery. You just never know what you're going to get there, and I like that. I can't decide whether to link you to a recent posts about quilts or to a post about plasit surgery. Go click them both, they're back to back on the blog and that's an example of the mix you get when you visit her.

Best Literary Weblog

A Chronic Dose is written by a woman who teaches writing courses for health professional students and she has several chronic health conditions. This is another "new to me" blog and I've enjoyed her most recent posts very much. The Evolution of the Mental Health Day is one example.

It was like being a kid all over again. At night, I listened to weather reports and compared varying levels of expected snowfall. The words “snow day” danced around my head, tantalizing me. As soon as my eyes opened in the morning, I peered out the window and headed right to my computer to see if classes had cancelled. I felt the same rush I used to feel when I realized I did not need to put on my uniform and trudge to the bus stop…

…And then I plunked down at my computer and dove into work, excited that I had such

Thanks so much, Denise, for raising awareness about the Medblog awards. It'd be great to grow a larger medical and health community at BlogHer. Count me in!

All my best,

Dr. Val
