2008 Good Health-a-thon: Week #3 - Need Inspiration?

This is the third update in a series, following the launch of BlogHer's 2008 Good Health-a-thon. Read about how it began and how you can set goals you can actually attain here.

I don't know about you, but it feels to me as though the month of January has lasted approximately two years. It is just dragggggging on, as though to say, "I know you are trying to make lifestyle changes, so I am going to test your resolve! I am going to make this month last an eternity! Bwahahahaha!" Because I guess January has nothing better to do than taunt all of us and our New Year's resolutions.

The trouble is, if you have your sights set on some major goals (as I do), getting there seems to take forever. For. Ev. Er. Which is why I have to remind myself again and again that setting short-term goals is really quite necessary. Otherwise, I'm going to feel discouraged.

So here is what I'm going to do, and where being a BlogHer is going to make all the difference in the world:

Every week, I'm going to set a healthy goal. Sometimes, it will be weight-related. Sometimes, it won't be. Always, it will be something I know I can do and that I'll feel good for doing. But perhaps most importantly, it's something I'm going to be accountable for. (Gah! "Accountable" is such a scary word!)

Because each week...*drum roll, please*...

...I am going to post my goal on my blog.

*cymbals crash*

Okay, so this isn't the first time anyone's thought of doing something like this, but it's the first time I've decided to get "official" about it. And I'm hoping you'll decide to do it with me. Yeah?

I mean, this is why we have blogs, right? To share, to support, to be all up in each other's business?

Erm, well, maybe not that last part, but you know what I'm getting at: there is a reason we blog, and a certain satisfaction we get from posting regularly: If we blog it, it must be so.

Right then. Here's how we can use our blogs to make it work and stay inspired! In just 4 steps!

1. Review how to set "S.M.A.R.T." Goals.

2. Pick a healthy goal (get some ideas here), and give yourself a reasonable time frame for achieving it: a day, a week, two weeks, a month.

3. Add one of the 2008 BlogHer Good Health-a-thon buttons to your blog. (Accountability!) There's one for "gentle" inspiration (i.e., no "pledging" required), and one that means you'll need to re-set your goals every time you achieve one. Woo hoo! (Buttons and code below).

4. Let us know how you're doing: add your buttoned-blog URL and results to the comments.

So...you ready? I'll add mine if you'll add yours...

(Take that, January!)

Spread them out throughout the day... great idea. Makes it seem much less daunting!
I will consider this for week 10 or so... at this point I think if I took my body from lounging to lunging it might rebel. I'll work up to it.
Good luck!

I have pledged to do 70 lunges and squats each day for the next two months. I will wake up, stretch, and throughout the day, do a few lunges and squats. I figure if I do 5 lunges and 5 squats 7 times a day, I've made my goal, just in time for the summer...................:)

My ass will be sore, but it'll look good..................LOl

Ok.... I have posted my new goal for week 4. We are heading to New Zealand at the end of the week, so hopefully vacation won't mean the death of my resolutions!

Yeah, I would be officially starting at Week 3, but I've been slowly-but-surely and quietly getting ready to join, really!

Two pieces of advice.

Choose exercise that you love and it won't be hard so get to daily and do it. I like a competitive sport, so I find I work harder because I am in competition all year long. To stay strong, I lift weights and use some type of aerobic machine on my off days. I work out six days a week and love it! I am not an athletitc person and did not start my sport until I had reached the age of 40. I am 54 now and I am in great shape. The sport I participate in is dressage, so it is a full body work out and as you go up the levels it becomes more difficult to do. It challenges me mentally and physically and I think that is why I love it so -- well, that and the horses. I love horses!

The second piece of advice I have is simple, eat mainly fruits and vegetables. They are all very low calories, so you can abuse them without problem. If you shop on the outside of your grocery store, you can't lose. For treats I make smoothies from bananas and raspberries (my fav) or gobble a hand full of nuts -- nuts have terrific fats for the heart!

Most of my friends are not successful with dieting but I have found if you combine exercise you love with healthy foods, I don't have problems with my weight or my health.

I've started doing my squats every time I change a diaper (!!!!) but I just wrote YESTERDAY about needing some help regarding a choice about gyms. If you know anything about gyms, come lend some advice ( http://stopdropandblog.com/2008/01/24/more-on-weig... ).

I'm not a fan of "September" but for years TW has been telling me that "January" is the really evil month. Yesterday, I decided she might be right. This morning, after reading your post, I'm closer to joining the "January lasts forever" bandwagon.

I'll be looking forward to reading your goals every month, Kristy. And, everyone else's too. My goals? err, no. I'll just be your loyal cheering squad. Everyone needs a cheering squad, right?

It is written.....

And I think I actually got the button thing on there. (I am a blog-novice).

I still have to get a workout in today and I am contemplating going to that stinkin spinning class tonight! I know if I don't call and sign up I will end up skipping the gym entirely, but the thought of listening to Justin Timberlake while being yelled at is less than motivating.... think she would be offended if I brought my own music and wore my headphones the whole time? Would that be rude? I think I need some gym etiquette lessons. Any spinning teachers out there with suggestions?
Happy goal setting!
