Betcha thought I forgot.
I mean, if you're anything like my inner-self, you're probably hoping maybe just a little bit that we'd drop this whole "Good Health-a-thon" business because January is over and everyone else has stopped haranguing you about your [expletive] New Year's Resolutions, right? Uh huh.
Except here I am with a new, monthly update. Oh, yes. I'll be checking in on the first Wednesday of every month to see how you're doing, plus hopefully entice new recruits and share some of my own (mis)adventures along the goal-setting extravaganza that is 2008.
So yep. Here it is, February already. And hopefully that means that you've been enjoying a month of doing good things for yourself. (Goal-setting refresher can be found here.)
Personally, I've been doing pretty well. My first order of business was to sit down and have a little discussion with Wine. If you know what I mean.
I'm sorry, Wine. It's not you, it's me. I've changed, you see. I've grown. Mostly horizontally. And I just don't think this is going to work out. It's time to re-evaluate our relationship.
As a result of this revised relationship and other changes in my daily diet (such as trying to cut out refined sugars), I have definitely been consuming fewer calories and generally feeling better. My next big step, then, for February is figuring out some sort of "work-out" routine. Because you know, I hear this "work out" thing is catching on.
HOWEVER.
I realized something very important as I was looking at my calendar and plotting my next set of goals: I haven't taken nearly enough time to recognize the achievements I've made or to reward myself for making them. Have you?
I propose that, before we launch ourselves headfirst into what we will be doing next, we recognize all the things we've done so far that have made us feel good. "Health" is a big umbrella, and I suspect if you take some time, you can list 5 to 10 things you've done since 2008 that have contributed to your feeling better physically, mentally, or spiritually.
And then, as you look to setting your goals in the next month, think about what you can do to reward yourself for a job well done. Think about something you really enjoy, something you may otherwise put off, something you consider a "treat." The only guidelines are that the reward should not be over-the-top (because neither should your goals). It's also probably best if your reward isn't something that counters your progress. (Ex: rewarding frugality with a spending spree; rewarding healthy eating with bingeing; rewarding a week of exercise with a week of skipping the gym.)
So let's hear it! What have you accomplished that's made you feel good? And how might you reward yourself for continuing to do so? I'm sure we can all use some good ideas...

My healthy thing today
Many months ago, hell, maybe a year ago, the S.O. broke something in our house. Ever since then it has been, of course, his job to get it fixed, and he hasn't. Moreover he has ignored my suggestion that he call my stepdad, Mr. Fixit, and have him help.
And this has been driving me silently crazy for all this time. I encounter and have to work around this broken thing at least once per day, and I have given up nagging about it and just been fuming about it.
So unproductive, no?
So this week while the S.O. has been away on business I called Mr. Fixit, and he came over today while I was working from home and started the fixit process.
I know I feel much more mentally healthy already.
(And I'm hoping the S.O. will be secretly relieved I went ahead and took care of it. What do you think?)
Does that count?

TOTALLY it counts!
I love when I do something like that (like finally change a lightbulb); it makes me feel like I've really accomplished something. And that doesn't even involve anyone else -- so yours is especially notable. Well done. :)

Health
I'm so glad you pointed out the wide umbrella that health is situated underneath. Whew. Today, my healthiness included eating breakfast (my least favorite meal ever) as well as taking some time out for myself to hula hoop...well, at least before it started storming outside ;]
Hula Hooping Sounds Awesome
Two healthy things for yourself in one day -- pretty good if you ask me.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean
but when I reached my weight loss goal last year - 75 pounds - I got a tattoo.
I rewarded myself each 10 pound level of weight loss with new clothes, a pedicure, a haircut or new color, a book that I was extra interested in reading. I also gave myself permission to buy new songs on iTunes every Friday that I worked out for an entire week.
I'm really enjoying this series!

Thanks, Carmen, and yep - that's *exactly*
what I mean!
75 lbs is amazing. Seriously. And I love that you had 10 lb. increments, too. I often fall victim of putting the carrot SO far out there that it seems like I'll never get it...and then give up.
What was the tattoo? :)

i beat you to it
I already posted my update on my progress on my SMART resolutions here: http://notjustaboutcancer.blogspot.com/2008/02/resolutions-2008-month-in...
I hadn't thought about rewarding myself though (although i have done so in other contexts, for sure). Hmm. Something to think about, for sure.
Thanks for another great post, Kristy. Once again, you made me guffaw out loud. Growing "mostly horizontally." Indeed.

Sigh heard 'round the world
I was dreading returning from vacation this week and having to admit failing at some of my goals. We spent the last week in New Zealand which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The contrast between daily life here in Shanghai and there could not be more extreme. While IT was a perfect vacation, I was not so perfect on vacation. The Sauvignon Blanc would not leave me alone and on our three day sailing trip (www.ecocruz.co.nz) they fed us the most delicious meals that absolutely required second helpings, not to mention the fact that I caught the tuna that the sushi was made from so I should eat LOTS of it!So thanks for not asking for more promises this week. I am going to reward myself by not counting the last week and move on as if I haven't missed a single workout session or consumed an extra calorie.
