25 1/2 Weeks Post Chemo....All Good Things Come to an End
By chiagal on May 09, 2011
Work has been absolutely crazy the past two weeks, so I am extremely behind on my blogs. I took pictures last week, but ran out of time to write a blog and post them. So this week I’ll just post both….sorry!
Last week marked the end of two big chapters in my life.
First, Friday (4/29) morning at 5am marked the end of my childhood dream of marrying Prince William and becoming the future Queen of England (sniff sniff). I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and LOVE fairy tale endings….so all of the hype around the royal wedding has been right up my alley! Not only did I set my dvr to record to different stations coverage (NBC was way better then TLC) of Will and I’s Kate’s big day, I also got up at the crack of dawn to watch it before going into to work. I didn’t want to run the risk of not being able to participate in the water cooler conversations that were bound to take place….it was the wedding of the century after all!
After re-watching the coverage several times over the weekend, I finally forced myself to delete the tapings from my dvr and return to reality. I’ve decided to take the high road and gracefully accept that I’ll never be HRH the Duchess of Cornwall and truly wish them the best!! I’ll always be a queen in my own mind
Second, my dancing days are officially over. I unfortunately did not make the most recent cut. I know my friends and family have all been worried about me and how I’d recover from the rejection….but I’m really ok with it. I talked previously about whether or not I was ready to put myself in a position to be judged heavily on looks knowing I leave a lot to be desired in the hair department and my self confidence levels are running pretty low these days. But now that the rejection has come and gone….it really wasn’t all that bad. Of course I would have loved to of made the team, but my life will go on. If someone would have told 6 months ago that I’d be trying out for a professional dance team again, I’d have laughed in their face. It’s amazing how much things can change in 6 months time.
Despite not making the team, I’m walking away holding my head high for even showing up for tryouts….and shaking my head at them for not picking me. Kidding!! I think the tryout process was really good for me. It helped remind me that cancer doesn’t rule my life. I’m healthy and able to get out there and do pretty much anything I want to do now. I had a lot of fun for a few weeks, met some really nice girls, and even gained back a tiny amount of the self confidence I’ve lost. Hopefully God has something else exciting in store for me now that this chapter of my life is closing…so bring it on…I’m ready!!
The upcoming week is going to be a busy and exciting one!!
I have my 6 month post-chemo check-up on Thursday. It’s pretty hard to believe that 6 months have already passed since I was preparing for and dreading my first round of chemo. So scared because I had no idea what to expect and still in serious denial that I was going to lose my hair. I don’t know what Thursday’s appointment will entail…my 3 month post chemo appointment was pretty uneventful…so hopefully this one will be the same. And speaking of chemo, I am sad to report my toe nails are now falling victim to the chemo curse….just in time for summer and sandal season! Damn chemo…the gift that keeps on giving!! Forewarning, don’t look at the photo below if feet gross you out.
I was also asked to walk in the “Jeans & Jewels Bling Your Booty” event on Saturday night. Jeans & Jewels is an event benefitting 24 hours of booty here in Charlotte (a cycling event) that will be raising money to support the battle against cancer. Given that I have a great booty am a cancer survivor (and have a good friend on the planning committee), I was asked to participate. Here is a link to the website if you want to read more about the event. I’m not sure what I’ll be modeling yet, I’ll find out more on Wednesday. But it should be a fun event none-the-less. If any of my adoring fans friends in Charlotte are interesting in attending, you can buy tickets on the jeans and jewels website. Tickets are $30 ($20 if you buy in groups of 10 or larger) and include food/drinks, dancing, and a chance to bid on and win items in a silent auction.
And finally….my birthday is also this week!! I’m typically not a huge fan of birthdays…but considering 11 months ago I thought I had been handed a death sentence and wasn’t going to live to see another birthday…I’ll be a little more excited than usual this year. In lieu of the birthday gifts you all were planning to give to me, I think you should buy a ticket to this Saturday’s event and come support (and laugh at) me in my runway debut!!
And finally because I love to hear about great books that other people read and share the good ones I’ve found…I’m recommending The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (info here). Storyline includes:
“In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.”
It’s a 3 book series I picked up at Barnes and Noble a week ago and haven’t been able to put down. I’m halfway through the third book already….which is probably a contributing factor to my lack of blog last week. I spent the time I should have spent writing reading my books instead!! They are making a movie out of the first book targeted for 2012…cast and current details here…so check it out if you are interested!!
