The 4th Grade Love Letter
By melaflin on February 17, 2014
Ryan came to me...."Mom, I need some help." He was super serious. Focused.
Me -- "Sure...what's up?"
Ryan -- "I've written a love letter to 'you-know-who'.= and I need your advice."
I keep my cool, I smile and say, "Why, certainly.....let me have a look."
MY SWEET LITTLE SON IS LETTING ME PROOFREAD AND ADVISE ON HIS FIRST LOVE LETTER!!!! CAN YOU FEEEEEEL MY LOVEEEEEEEEEE POURING OUT? And...my nosiness to what it says.
(Yes...I snapped a picture...he wasn't looking....I'm a mom, I must)
Me -- "Well, let's start with spelling her name correctly?"
Ryan -- "GEEZ! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EMBARRASSING! She's so smart..she would have just been horrified!"
(Yep, I agree, but I do not acknowledge...we are looking for the GOOD...not the "you messed up")
Me -- "I think you've left out an important detail...."
Ryan -- "WHAT? I READ IT LIKE 15 MILLION TIMES!"
Me -- "You don't ever get around to asking her to be your girlfriend. Is that the goal?"
Ryan -- (crickets)......................(crickets)........................(crickets)
"Mom, you are a genius."
He rewrites. It's a cute masterpiece of a 4th grade crush. He keeps in his pocket.
I wait...and ask after agonizing all day "sooooo, did you give her the note?"
Ryan -- "Nah, I'll wait for Valentine's Day."
Then....it's 2/14......Me, before school, "You ready? You got the goods?"
Ryan - "READY...I have a PLAN!"
I wait....alllllllll dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.
School is out!!!!! Here he is! Talking NON-STOP about the fire alarm going off and fire trucks...and NOTHING ABOUT THE NOTE.
Finally! I cannot TAKE IT, "Um, Ryan...the note?"
Ryan -- "Oh, she went to Disneyworld, since we are out of school Monday and Tuesday next week, can you believe that?"
ROBBBEDDDDDD. I WAS ROBBBEEEDDDDD.
Me - "Well, that's no good."
Ryan - "Aw mom...there's always next WEDNESDAY."
I can't keep up with the "4th Grade Days Of Our Lives".
She better come BACK Wednesday....I need closure.
I'm very proud of him. Coming to me for advice. On a 'serious' subject in his world. We really have amazing conversations and talks....I'm happy to know he feels comfortable with me to share. I hope it stays this way....he feels at ease on this stuff with is mom.
