5 Tips for Cyber Monday Shopping

BlogHer Original Post

Are you going to let your fingers do the shopping on Cyber Monday? Every year there are more resources to help you organize your strategy to get the best deals online before they're all gone. Here are some tips.

Let the Others Do the Work for You

Keep up with all the sites that dedicate themselves to all things Cyber Monday. Here are a few I found:

Organize Your List

There is no time of year quite like the holidays for SHINY SHINY OF COURSE I NEED ALL NEW SILVERWARE FOR $19.99! And then before you know it, you're down $500 that you didn't mean to spend in the first place that you probably didn't have on stuff you don't even want. Having a list and sticking to it is the best plan. I know, I know, it's hard, but this is when it's time to practice some discipline. Shut off the computer and walk away if you feel the SHINY GNOMES coming for you.

Check Your Balance

MaryAnn Bekkedahl, president of email organization and deal-finding service theSwizzle.com, recommends making sure your method of payment is ready. She writes:

As a precaution, make sure your credit cards are in tip-top shopping shape before the big day hits. Check your balances and have your CCs handy for checkout.

Good point -- if you don't watch your credit cards closely and have autopayments attached to them, you may not have as much wiggle room on the plastic as you think. Better to find that out before you get to the checkout!

Shop Early

At least on Cyber Monday, you don't have to tent out in the cold! But it's probably not a bad idea to set your alarm, either. If you're like me, you'll be headed back to work on Monday and the boss probably doesn't approve of losing three hours of your productivity to the siren song of SHOCKING LOW PRICES! Also, some sites only have a finite amount of product at that price, so you better get while the getting's good.

Don't Get Caught Holding the Bag

MaryAnn points out you should review shipping & return policies. Shipping can be expensive, and no deal is worth it if you have to pay to send back a gift that didn't fit.
