5 Ways You May Be Unintentionally Holding Back Your Career

Ever feel like you must have accidentally skipped that class on how to navigate and grow your career?
You wonder who really need to know that will either give you the right guidance, insights or referrals. You want to be seen for your true capabilities, but can’t seem to figure out how. You have at least one co-worker who is constantly critical and makes you tense.
Problem is, you didn’t skip any class. It didn’t exist!
So you forged through these challenges, making mistakes, missteps, and having downright painful experiences. You’ve made some progress but you still don’t feel confident handling situations and how to truly put yourself in the driver’s seat of your career.
- Do you truly feel confident in your skills and abilities? How about how to handle changing situations?
You KNOW where you work, what’s your work, or how you work won’t be exactly the same 12 months from now. If you constantly dread making shifts you waste tremendous energy is “what was” rather than investing it in “what is and what will be.”
- Do you know which relationships you should develop for your career and how?
Everything related to your work and career is dependent upon relating to others. If you can’t develop relationships well or with the right people, you will always be at the whim of those who can.
- Are you sure you can spot power plays and know how to respond so that you’re not played yourself?
All relationships have a power dynamic, be it constructive or destructive. Imagine no longer being a victim of power plays and feeling authentically powerFULL each day of your career.
- Are you comfortable talking about yourself and the value you already add?
Don’t assume others understand what you do and why it matters, even if you interact with them frequently. You have to take the lead and let them know in a way that matters to them.
- Are you thinking and acting strategic enough to be taken seriously?
Being a heads-down, implementation worker bee is a sure way to always be in demand, but never fully appreciated for more you have to offer. Focusing “what” matters and “why” will begin to turn heads.
If you answer “yes” to all of these questions, then you get to pass go and collect $200!
But, chances are you’re like most women who answered “no” to one or more of these questions. It’s also means that YOU are unintentionally holding back your own career. Not your employer, not your clients, you. Sounds harsh, but that’s the reality.
Because it’s not up to any organization or anyone else to sharpen your career savvy. It’s up to you. Especially in these crazy, unpredictable times a class on career-savvy would be more than handy.

This list could go on and on, but already I feel your overwhelm. You already have a ton on your plate. But, you don’t have to do ALL of these things. You just have to do ONE thing. Then, perhaps, you say yes to another. And maybe another.
