The 5 W's and the H of a Selfie
"Oh my god. I'm at a concert with all of my girlfriends and we look awesome.
This definitely means we need to take a selfie."
Selfies are everywhere. The Chainsmokers even wrote a song about selfies.
And yes, I like to take them just as much as the next person.
I was taking selfies back when, in order to see the final image, we had to drop the disposable camera or roll of film off at our local drugstore to have the film developed.
Do you know how stressful it was waiting to get your developed film back? All you wanted to know was how the picture came out. And if it wasn't good, in the trash it went. Oh how wonderful instant gratification is.
The selfie has become so important in our culture that it has been added to the dictionary.
Seeing how prevalent selfies have become, I thought it might be fun to craft a post using the old information gathering technique of the '5Ws and the H'. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.
The 5 Ws
Who: You. You and 8 of your friends. You and an entire auditorium of people. Whatever your heart desires, even though by definition (see above) it is supposed to be just of you. In fact, if you're wondering just when selfies became less about you, and more about the group, check out the great piece The Atlantic wrote titled 'When Did Group Pictures Become Selfies?'
What: Per the definition above, a selfie is a photograph that a person takes of themselves for sharing on social networks.
Where: Anywhere you like. In your bedroom, in your bathroom, at a concert, at your graduation, or after your plane crashes (She got some flack for doing so, however; I probably would have done the same thing. Or I would have thought about it. After I got over the shock that my plane had just crashed and decided I was never getting on a plane again.)
Anywhere your heart desires.
You could also take them during various points of a road race like this woman did. (Brilliant idea, btw. Talk about taking your mind off the fact that you're running 13.1 miles. This might be an option while I run my first 5K.)
When: This warrants a time frame, but there is no time frame when it comes to selfie-taking.
I will say, please take note of your surroundings. If there is a large group of people behind you, try to avoid capturing them in the photo. Because if they are in the background, chances are one of them will photo-bomb you. For the record, I am sometimes that person. This aspect also falls under the 'where' of selfie-taking.
Why: Ah.... the why of the selfie? Why does one feel the need to take a selfie and share it with the world. It could be because you need a new profile picture or you're having a really good hair day. Or you simply just feel like taking a photo to say 'Hi!' to the world.
I don't take them often, but my 'why' when I do? I'm probably bored and I can't find anything else to take a picture of. Usually there is no planning behind it. Kind of like this one.
This is an example of my 'Bored and Killing Time' Selfie.
But sometimes, I'm just really excited about something and need to take one. Like the one below. I had just gotten a Keurig for my birthday and drank a bunch of coffee at 5 PM (Actually, it was probably more like... 8 PM.)
My 'I drank too much coffee way too late' Selfie
But some people have become so obsessed with their why, they're willing to get plastic surgery to look even better.
How: So how do you take a selfie? Grab your smartphone, preferably one with a front facing camera. Check the lighting. Check your hair. Check your angles. Check the background. Get ready, and snap away. If you're like me, you'll take about 25 before you decide that one of them is acceptable to post.
If you don't have a smartphone, you can use a digital camera.... or a disposable camera. Yes, people still use those.
Check out these great tips by The Globe and Mail. They are fantastic. And right to the point.
Now go out and snap some selfies!
(Disclaimer: This post is meant to be informative, funny and just my thoughts on the selfie. I've been wanting to write something like this for a while, and finally did. The links are legit. I put them here because I find them interesting, and they fit with what I was writing about. There is no mocking or making fun of in this post. NONE. I respect each and every person who is written about or had their selfie go viral. Seriously. It's amazing. I would love to go viral with a selfie. Or a blog post. Or anything for that matter - another blog post for another day)
With that, I will leave you with my blizzard selfie
Blizzard Nemo - 2012. Yep. That happened.
