6 Tips to Keep You Healthy and Happy at the BlogHer Conference

When you come home from the BlogHer conference, you will hopefully have a camera full of photographs, a pocket full of bloggie business cards, and a suitcase full of swag. But what you don't want to bring home is exhaustion, or even worse, a cold. Before you leave for BlogHer, check my list of things to bring with you or do while you're there in order to come home refreshed instead of drained.
Pack all medications in your purse or carry-on luggage just in case you get separated from your bags as you travel. Just in case you need something while you're there, there is a Walgreens only 1/3rd of a mile from the Fairmont Hotel (5 South First Street -- (408) 283-0835).
It is possible to fill every single hour you're in San Jose, including the ones in the middle of the night. Parties extend well past bedtime, and it's hard to cut short a conversation with a blogger you've been looking forward to seeing all year. Still, make sure that when you're scheduling in panels and parties that you also schedule in sleep. A lack of sleep strains your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. There will be plenty of time to download photos and upload blog posts when you get home. In the meantime, make sure you're getting enough sleep overnight.
Do your shoulders a favour and leave the laptop at home (or, at least, back in your hotel room). You're going to be spending a lot of time walking around the conference space and Expo Hall, picking up more items along the way, and your back may protest under the numerous pounds you're dragging along. Look at your heaviest items and decide whether you really need them or whether you can pack something lighter. Go for the iPad instead of a laptop, or even better, your phone and a paper notebook. Your back will thank you later.
You're going to be doing a lot of standing at parties and a lot of walking between panels. Leave the heels in the hotel room during the day and pack your most comfortable shoes. Yes, there will be other people in sneakers or cute flats. If you're dying to wear a certain pair of shoes, consider throwing a pair of foldable ballet flats in your purse to wear as you walk.
REMEMBER TO EAT
There is plenty to eat at BlogHer between meals, snacks, and treats in the Expo Hall. The main thing is not forgetting to eat! I know, it seems crazy when I write about it, but I can't tell you how many times I walked into the next panel and realized that I had spent the lunch hour talking to someone or listening to the keynote, and not actually eating. Pack a few protein-heavy snacks with you for the trip. I went with peanuts and energy bars. You're going to end up doing a lot of walking; make sure you're consuming enough calories so you don't get run down.
You are not going to be able to do it all. You will not be able to attend every panel session, every party, every keynote. You will not be able to meet every blogger. Go in with that attitude and you'll learn that it's better to forgo a few opportunities and take breaks. Find a quiet space to read a chapter of a book and recharge. Skip the large, loud party and have a quiet dessert with friends. Go back to your room and take a power nap in the middle of the day. Anything that lets you grab a little down time so you don't become overwhelmed.
