9th Annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta: Pre-Race
By KarenLynnn on October 23, 2012
We flew to Portland this past weekend to visit a-dec to tour the plant that makes dental equipment and look at preliminary plans that Patterson drew up for our office expansion. We spent the entire day at a-dec on Friday, and for Saturday, we were promised that we would do touristy things to. Perhaps visit the coast, which was 2 hours from our hotel.
But Saturday morning we woke up to cloudy and misty weather, and driving for 2 hours to the coast in a car full of 7 people was the last thing I really wanted to do. The weather promised 50 degree temps, wind and rain. That just didn't sound like the way to spend the day-especially when we looked out at the Tualatin Lake Commons and saw the blue tents going up.
We weren't sure exactly what was going on, but after breakfast, we told the salespeople from Patterson and a-dec that we'd like to stick around and watch the festivities going on right outside our hotel room. I'm glad we did.
It was the 9th Annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta! Early in the day we wandered around and looked at the giant pumpkins, watched the official pumpkin judges watch the official pumpkin carvers create boats out of the giant pumpkins entered into the contest.
They used a skid loader to move the pumpkins to a front end loader which was perched at the lake ready to strap on the monster squash and weigh then lower them into the lake.
The largest pumpkin of the day weighed in at 1575 pounds!
I sat around the lake and watched the carvers, and took a lot of photographs! When we first went down, I brought the "good camera", my Nikon d800.
But I got so nervous with rain threatening to fall, I only snapped a few photos with it, then I took it back to our hotel room which just so happened to have a balcony facing the lake where the Giant Pumpkin Regatta was taking place.
Once the rain passed, I headed back down and sat and watched the carvers and judges and the lowering of the pumpkins.
I wasn't sure where Michael was, but he sent me a text asking me where I was and I sent him this photo (above) to show him. It was crowded!
Lots of big and little people in costume were there.
There was a giant pumpkin where you could pose under the 9th Annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta sign-in the pumpkin. No, I didn't do that, but I did take a photo of a cute family posing with the monster squash.
PS: All of these photos came from my iPhone 5. I'm really impressed with the quality of the photographs it takes.
