Two Decades of Women

The L Word

A couple of decades ago, I realized everything in my life up to that point had been determined by men. I can hear my friend Denise shouting, “It’s the patriarchy, stupid!” That’s not it -- at least not completely. The patriarchy is still with us. But inside my head, things have changed.  Read more

food photography set-up

Now that I've found the perfect spot and the perfect light, I've been able to concentrate more on composition and personal style. You never would have guessed from that set up, I was able to get this shot -- not bad for guerrilla-style photography, eh?  Read more

DWTS

The thing I like: No obvious ringers. No figure skaters or gymnasts, no refugees from a dance-oriented boy (or girl) band. If you look at the winners of the first few years of DWtS, they were underdogs or unexpected. In the last few years, you could have predicted the finals from the beginning. Now it's not so clear. At this time, the SWAT team is there, trying to enter the building and remove the gunman. The daycare on the premises of the Discovery Channel headquarters has been evacuated to the McDonald's across the street.  Read more

Obama During His Speech

Last night, President Obama addressed the nation, claiming that all combat troops would be withdrawn from Iraq, fulfilling a campaign promise to end the eight-year war there begun during the Bush Administration. Speaking from the Oval Office, the President declared "mission accomplished," claiming that Iraqi forces will now be responsible for keeping their own security, with the aid of about 50,000 "military advisors" -- US troops who will provide military training and consulting to Iraqi forces.  Read more

Rose-Colored Glasses: My Favorite Tints and Stains

Benefit Posietint

For as long as I've been wearing makeup, I've been obsessed with lip/cheek stains and tints. This is likely due to the fact that I technically wasn't ALLOWED to wear makeup until I was 16, and I used tints and stains to slyly get by my Mom, all, "WHAT? I'm NOT WEARING LIPSTICK, SEE??" and swipe my hand across my seemingly-bare (yet obviously colored) lips as proof. Sneaky, sneaky, me.  Read more

Grizzly Bear

Without the Democratic or Republican parties realizing it, women on the right changed dramatically over the last thirty years. Many feminists on the left must be asking themselves, "How did we get here? When did conservatives start embracing the word "feminism" with enthusiasm?  Read more
