ADDED: New Thursday Afternoon Kick-Off Keynote at #BlogHer15 Featuring #womenslives and #BlackLivesMatter

BlogHer Original Post

We're less than three weeks out, but the announcements are still rolling in fast and furious.

Today I'm am proud to announce we have added a NEW Thursday afternoon Kick-off Keynote for #BlogHer15:Experts Among Us from 5-6 PM, July 16, right before the Evening at the Expo.

UPDATED TO ADD: Breaking news that a second #BlackLivesMatter co-founder, Opal Tometi, will be joining her co-founder Patrisse Cullors for this conversation with Vanessa De Luca.

This keynote will have two segments: an important project, searing rally cry and cultural touchstone; and some inspiring women leaders including philanthropist Melinda Gates, #BlackLivesMatter Co-founder Patrisse Cullors, Essence Magazine Editor-in-Chief Vanessa De Luca, Public Radio International (PRI) CEO Alisa Miller, and my own BlogHer Co-founder and SheKnows Media Chief Community Officer, Lisa Stone.

  • Alisa and Lisa will report on the impact of our joint initiative, #womenslives. A social publishing incubator, #womenslives was developed to amplify PRI-produced global news coverage about women and girls via the social commentary and reach of the SheKnows community.

As part of this segment Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will join live by video to discuss the critical role of storytelling and its contribution to achieving meaningful change for women and girls worldwide.

  • The Keynote will then feature a conversation between Vanessa and Patrisse. #BlackLivesMatter was cofounded by Patrisse with her two co-founders, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin.

Since then, it has become the rallying cry of the modern civil rights movement and a cultural touchstone.

Vanessa was at the helm of Essence Magazine for the February 2015 issue, which for the first time in its history featured instead of an image, a black background with the words, “Black Lives Matter”.

As Lisa shared in our press release this morning: "These keynote speakers are creating and leading some of the world's most important conversations about human society. It will be an honor and a priority to hear their stories live and in person."

Given current events, we can't think of a more important conversation to kick off the largest convening of women with a formidable online platform, reach, and influence.

You can still join us, if you haven't already bought your ticket. And we hope you will.
