Adding Shaping to Knit Sweater

 

I have been asked to talk a little about how I add “lady” shape to knit sweaters.
There are many ways to do that. The most common ones are adding short rows and vertical darts.

Most if the time I add vertical darts.

This one is for a person with an ample bust.

This one is for a young girl with a small bust.

The most important thing I do is to look at the person I’m knitting for.

And I mean really look. Where and how much does the body curve in or out?

Almost everyone curves in, in the back, and most ladies need to accommodate the bust. Many would benefit from some waist shaping and some space for a belly curve.

This is a waist decrease (4 in all) in the front for a very slim young girl;

she curves more in the back so there are more decreases there (6).

I don’t have any magic formula or any calculations to share.
The number of increases or decreases depends on the size of the curve, the weight of the yarn and on how closely you want the garment to fit.

The second thing I do, is try the garment on. As often as possible, especially if you are not used to add shaping.

Then I try it on again.
