Adorable and Affordable Headband Trends for Fall and Winter

As the head of registration for BlogHer events, I'm a little bit famous for my red headband.

I wanted to have something that could be pointed out quickly in a crowd or used to describe me to someone who needed me -- "the girl in the glasses" or "the one with the short hair" can mean a lot of us in a conference of a thousand blogging women! But "the girl with the red bow" is a good identifier, and it's easy to tell someone you've never met in person, "if you need me, I'll be the one wearing the headband". (In fact, I was horrified when I realized I was at the BlogHer San Francisco Holiday Party WITHOUT my headband.)

And so, as a noted headband aficionado, here are some of the trends and themes I love right now in the land of hair accessories:

- Bows. Of course, I can't be the Girl with the Red Bow and not love bow headbands! Right now the style is anything from oversized satin ribbon (like mine, which was a custom order from my friend at SweetRococo.com and is now discontinued, to my dismay) to demure and metallic, like the Anything Bows Headband from Modcloth.com. Just a heads up, though -- if you wear a bow while holiday shopping, people will ask you if you are trying to dress like a present; I typically say yes, yes I am.

- Studs. Since rocker-chic is so big this year, it's no surprise that I'm a little bit obsessed with studded accessories. The double-studded headwrap from FredFlare.com looks great with a chignon, as you can see by the model shot, but would also work well with loose hair, while Forever 21 has a single-row studded headband that comes in black and teal.

- Zippers. Yes, zippers in your hair! Not only does Forever 21 have a zipper flower headband, they also have zipper bobby pins and zipper hair clips. Or, if you don't feel like zipper rosettes are your thing, this zipper headband from SchickiMickis.etsy.com is straight-up zipper cuteness that you can zip open for a wide headband or zip closed for a narrower one. (Be careful not to snag your hair, though!)

- Sequins. 'Tis the season to get sparkly, isn't it? Forever 21, again, has a simple black sequined headband as well as a three-piece set of single-row sequin headbands. Mall shops like F21, H&M, and Claire's always have lots of inexpensive and cute accessories like these; my recent sequin headband purchases came from Styles For Less and have gotten quite a few compliments.

- Feathers. I purchased a navy blue feather headband from charmschooldesign.etsy.com last year, and it completely saved me from a bad hair day last summer. My hair was not behaving that morning, so I stuck the headband on, and all day people noticed the feathers and not my wonky hair. Magic! I also love simple one-row feathered headbands, like the peacock feather headband at LovMely.etsy.com; how pretty is that against her dark hair?

As you can see, I like my headbands thin and low-profile besides any major decorations (like a bow or a pad of feathers) -- you don't want to overpower your hair or your head with big thick poofy headbands, especially if you have short hair. At that rate, go ahead and wear a tiara (and yes, I am giving you permission to wear a tiara. Why not?).

What are your favorite hair accessories? Do you keep it simple, or do you like taking on trends? What are your favorite mall shop accessory finds?

Thanks for all of the links! I love wearing headbands!  I don't think they are just for kids anymore.  So cute!

There are so many cute zipper headbands on Etsy, that was just one! Most of them don't actually zip. Another one I love is this one with the simple rosette and the zipper on the band itself: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=36...

But yes, it definitely could end up as a The Pain We Suffer for Fashion problem...

With the zippers, because the first couple of links? Too cute. But then I got to the last one and flashbacks of every single time my hair got caught a zipper why doing up a jacket or hoodie and OUCH!

The studded ones are quite cute though.

Headbands tend to be pretty youthful (especially if you're going for giant bows and flowers), which is why I like the sleek studded ones so much, especially with the hair pulled back. It's more for decoration than for holding back bangs!

I haven't worn a headband since I was in elementary school! But I like the idea of sticking with thin and low profile.
