We'll discuss a number of different things today.

Robert: Commission level is pretty straight forward. The network should never reject you, commission level should cookie period average is 45 days, that’s an important factor, data feed is where the merchants can put the catalog on the network, a lot of the best affiliates promote on the access level.

EPC means the earnings per hundred clicks and helps normalize what the program should earn, aim for EPC around 50, anything really high, over 100 is usually not believable.

THE PLAYERS and KEY TERMS. Term OPM outsourced program managers, a lot of companies don’t have the resources to do this in house.

Affiliate network role, act as....

Question: as a small business, can you work with a network if you have a product to sell?

Robert: yes, but if you under 50 or 100 million in sales, then you should try to work with target merchants. There is also some fantastic has offers, performance horizon, include some of the merchants for smaller

Question: When did you first start Affiliate Merchants: two years ago, and I hesitated because I didn’t really know how it worked. A friend showed me the ropes Here is how you do

I started a few years ago and I found a niche which was finding deals on line. And it took about 6-8 months before I got my first check. For me, I didn’t understand where it could go, but it’s really build it and they will come.

I started in 2008-09 and affiliate was the way in which I could earn money on my blog. So I started my blog in order to do Aff Marketing. You have to make sure that the products you sell fits with your content.
How I started Skimlinks, it wasn’t a blog, it was more of an early pinterest site, visual shopping site. So during the recession of 2008, I realized after talking to publishers, and I dumped everything else and built this platform. We now work with over 20k sites such as pinterest that is using us for 2 years. The way that it works, all you have to do is to sign up for skimlinks, we get you approved right away on our 20k, link to the merchant, and you automatically get the referral. I’m a big proponent of tools and I believe that Skimlinks makes it a lot more fun.

Question: How do you decide who you will work with.

Answer, Nina: I made the decision early on that I will choose who I want to work with. If I don’t believe in the brand and the brand believes in my blog, I will work with them. That’s my approach and how I choose to run my blog.

Keri: I agree with that, you have to slowly build your market and you have to be true to what you are selling. Your readers will understand that your making a commission. But you can’t one day love one photo company and then the next time, love another one.

Sally: I don’t do any affiliate ads on my site. I haven’t found that the affiliate ads work. So I use affiliate info in my site on my posts. One of the models that I use are on reader request. Here is an example on this slide: If you are looking summer sandals, for example, here is what the post would look like. I merge my affiliates into my posts balanced with plenty of unaffiliated links keeps me true to my product.

Audience: On my site, I don’t do reviews, does affiliate marketing work for a site like mine?

Answer: Yes, you could ads, there are text links, and you can work with the manager to.

Audience: how do you disclose? Answer, in my top menu bar, I disclose that I have a disclosure page, and I also include the information on each post. And your readers will appreciate that. You'll find that they want to support you. They'll avoid opening a new browser, they'll actually want to help you get that commission.

Legal threshold is that you have to disclose somewhere on your blog. And I integrate on my blog that I received the product as part of the program so there are ways to make this integrated into your content. Most of my product review is through BlogHer so it's in the post but this is based on your own site and preference. Some bloggers will disclose separately.

If I already have affiliate links on my site, so I'm curious, if I have years from six years ago, can i add skimlinks to it? Answer, just copy and paste one set of code and it goes back to all.....

Is there a hover code that can take place over certain links.

Disclosing is important because you are going to make money but with skimlinks, we have tools where

I work with UPS and we don't work with a blogger that doesn't disclose and we make sure that we work with bloggers that are authentic. we read what the bloggers write and when we can tell that the blogger just wrote the post to get paid then they just get paid but that's not what we are hoping for.

Brand Association, how do they work?

Sally: I don't have brand associations, I generally pick what I think my readers want to wear, so a pair of shoes that look like the ones I'm wearing. It's really about how applicable the product i find is for my audience, it's not just about the relationships.

Keri: For me it's different, I usually have loyalty to certain brands, and I work with campaigns but ....

Nina: i don't have to filter through my email because I really don't have that many relationships, it's all about the program manager. I prefer to work with managers that I know so I check those emails first before I check the auto-generated emails sent to thousands.

What happens if you find a product that you love and you don't know how to get affiliate links. I would say don't hesitate to teach a company how to do affiliate marketing. I just worked with a company that asked me to write about a product I told her that to give bloggers more of an incentive to write a good post about the product.

Question: I live in a state where amazon severed their relationships, is there a way where skimlinks can work around that issue? Answer: Yes, our lawyers have said that there is a way to work around the issues.

Affiliates works on cookies, there are a lot of programs that are tricking people on what they are doing, they work around. To our panelists, do you check to see how to improve the program.

Answer: I don't watch it that closely, but I probably should. If I see there were 500 clicks on a product I don't assume it's because I'm getting cheated. Sometimes I get a call from a program manager telling me that I had 1000 clicks but no sales so we try and figure out a way to improve the sales.

You need to know what your readers are doing and what they are buying and when. You should know that spring is when baby announcements are being sold.

Another important issue I wanted to discuss is rewarding the right people. If a reader clicks

1-2 sales per 100 clicks, if you Google coupon plus the merchant and you see paid ads up and down the side, that's a good indication that this is not a good loyalty program and there will be work around.

Question: I'm a new blogger, my blog is only about 4 months old and it's hosted on wordpress.com and I don't have google analytics. Can I still do affiliate marketing?

Answer: In my top menu bar, I disclose that I have a disclosure page, and I also include the information on each post.

Alicia: Yes, if you are paying for the hosting then it should be no problem.

Creatives: How do you handle ads, and what size do you prefer?

Answers: Sally, I don't do ads on my site.

Panelist 3: I do ads and I prefer the 300 by 250 and I don't run a lot of ads just the brands I really believe in. I don't like the 600 size because it just looks like NASCAR.

Audience Question: Can you guys talk about commission actions, CPM deals, and do you have a preference.

Alicia: we are exploring working with bloggers and merchants on cost per click.

Nina: I work advertising three different ways, I do BlogHer which is based on pageviews, I do direct ads based on clicks, and then I do affiliate networking. It's a good idea to diversify the revenue stream.

Question: I used adwords 10 years ago, I found that people were stealing the code on my site. I want to get your idea on using more popular brand names.

Alicia: I remember ebooks, and I think in recent years, within the last 5 years, things have really improved.

Robert: Yes, it's important to see what's going on with your merchant conversion rates. If you have 1000 clicks, no sales, something is wrong with the conversion.

Question: I was wondering, can I do skimlinks and a program manager like Skimlinks?

Alicia: It depend on how much effort you want to put into it.

Sally: Sometimes I'll send someone to Amazon and I get the revenue off the shoe they purchased and their groceries.
