After the Holidays - Coping (or not) with An Endless Winter

The craziness of the holidays is past and life seems almost normal - except that - for some reason I can't explain - I'm having the 'After-Holidays" blues.  Usually I can't wait to tear down the tree, do some deep-cleaning and re-organizing and resume everyday living, but this Christmas, with my son home from college and some personal milestones finally met, I decided to go all out for Christmas and decorate every square inch of my house.  It might have been a tad overblown, but the results, for me, were gratifying, and when my husband came home from work after I'd put on the last  of the finishing touches - like boughs and bows on the corners of mirrors and pictures - he told me our house looked beautiful... like a Christmas set for Brie VanDeCamp's home on "Desperate Housewives".  Admittedly, that was not quite the look I was striving for, but he noticed!!!  Then I decided to have a party with all of my female, teacher colleagues.  I even booked a massage therapist to come and give us chair massages.  The house looked gorgeous, the food was prepared and waiting, and the snow storm hit!  I was left with two huge casseroles of Penne Rosa and Tuscan Chicken with bowtie pasta, more pizzelles than I could count along with other Italian cookies and cakes.  One or two brave souls who lived close by came over and we snacked on a few things, as well as imbibing in some spiked egg-nog, but the world was snowed in and so, all of these elaborate preparations went to waste.  Well, strike that!  In truth, all of these elaborate preparations were lavished on my son and husband.  The house was spotless and lit by candles, the smell of rum cake and vodka sauce permeated the kitchen and with soothing Christmas music - you know the kind I mean - instrumental and cheery - playing in the background, my two men took off their wet jackets, boots and hats, and sat at a table fit for my women friends, and enjoyed a delicious meal while the snow fell outside, making it look, for all the world, like we were encased in a snowglobe.  Even the failed party didn't dampen my spirits, and after dinner, we donned our snowgear and walked outside in a hushed and blanketed world of white.  It was a truly magical moment - with our without a party.

But now, reality returns, including the five pounds I gained with constant snacking.  My husband's back at work and school looms only a week away.  Ugh!

Getting in some physical activity outdoors is a great way for me to deal with the blues, no matter what time of year.  And as for the extra pounds, a return to normal eating can take care of those.  What happens for many of us, though, is that the constant snacking continues for a while.  Takes a little cold turkey.
