The other day, I thought about the many ways I have changed in the 10 months since my stepson has been with us. Prior to him coming to live with us, I was the Mom of a 5 year old girly girl. I was the Mom of a little girl who had just started Kindergarten and I was a Mom who was learning this whole school thing as I went. I was routine at it's finest.
Then. I was dropped into the middle of teenage-dom. I was facing a 13 year old in middle school - and he's a boy!
I've learned a lot these past 10 months, about myself, about kids in general, about the loyalties of gender. Read: my stepson will side with his Dad, almost always. Read: I've suggested he check his loyalties at the door. Read: He had better just go ahead and agree with me if he knows what's best. Read: He holds up the white flag. Read: We all get along.
I've also learned that there isn't a whole lot that compares to a now 6 year old girl and 14 year old boy.
------------------------
6 YO: Thinks boys are okay to pummel while playing tag and are good for nothing else. Which isn't necessarily wrong, is it?
14YO: Caught him checking out a hot girl at Starbucks the other day. Then I pointed out another one. That's okay right? Pointing out hot girls to your stepson?
-------------------------
6YO: Won't eat mashed potatoes or applesauce.
14YO: Will try anything once.
------------------------
6YO: Will run out of the house to play in green polk-a-dot shorts and a pink and white striped shirt - hair a mess, barefoot.
14YO: Primps more than I do. Also, his beauty products cost more than mine do.
------------------------
6 YO: Knows that "stupid" and "kill" are bad words in our house.
14 YO: Dropped a cuss* word when he tipped his kayak and ended up in the middle of, quite possibly, the nastiest river known to man. He may or may not have smelled like poo after that trip, causing him to use his expensive beauty supplies in abundance.
*There is some debate as to what exactly that word was and some people may say they didn't cuss at all - the world may never know the truth.
------------------------
Also, I've learned that I'm entirely too young and too pink to get the whole boy thing.
