The 2 Things You MUST Do in a Job Interview

For all the advice I give you, or that you read on other websites, or that you hear from career coaches, I want to tell you that it's really so simple.
There are literally only two things you must do in an interview.
I know, I know. There are hundreds of articles out there, advice columns, and "tips from experts" that tell you differently. "5 Things You Must Do In An Interview." "10 Things to do to Prepare for that Interview." " Seven Things you Should do at an Interview." "What you Must do the Night Before an Interview." "The One Thing You Should do Immediately After an Interview." "The Mistake You're Making Before You Even Get to the Interview!"
What happens if you do the seven things from one article, but not all ten from another article? Are you doomed? It's enough to set any job applicants' head spinning!
The truth is that if you've been invited to interview, you've made it through the first - and hardest - part of the process. Your resume caught someone's attention. They want to know more about you. You probably meet the required qualifications for the position.
So rest easy. Take a breath. And remember that you only have to do two things.
- Show Up
On time, yes. At the right address, of course. More than that, though, show up. Be present, be enthusiastic, be grateful for this opportunity, be polite, be professional. Which all leads me to the second point....
- Be Yourself
Don't pretend to be someone you're not. If you're nervous, that's ok. Remember that you're there for a reason. They asked you to come to them. Smile. Be authentic.
There is enough advice out there to drive someone insane with anxiety. Don't buy into it. Show up for the interview, and be yourself. In the end, those are the only two things that you can control. So why worry about all the other stuff?
