Aloha, Oy, or Where's the Travel Editor?
by Pam

Every now and then, this BlogHer travel editor gets it in her head that she ought to turn off the computer, pick up the camera, and head out into the world to see some things for herself.

For most of November, husband and I will be rushing about Hawaii as we do research and photography for a new travel guide. I'll post trip reports if I get a chance, but in the meantime, I encourage you to check out BlogHer's travel blogroll - there are cool new blogs added almost every week.

Also,in a shameless self promotional plug,I've been writing a about what it's really like to pull together a travel guide. If you're interested, please check out my new series, Aloha Oy, on Nerd's Eye View.

Sunscreen, laptop, loads of compact flash memory, credit card? Check. Aloha, and mahalo for reading.

Which islands, and have you been before?

Let me know if you need any restaurant tips for Oahu...

I miss it there so much...

Thanks, Amanda!

We're going, to everyone's aggravation, everywhere. The Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Moloka'i and Lana'i. People who have liked us for a long time hate us. Oh well. They'll be hating us while we're in Hawaii.

And if you have favorites, drop me a line!

If you make it to Hilo, you

If you make it to Hilo, you have to check out the Hilo Farmer's Market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings at the market square in the heart of downtown Hilo). There is an array of produce there that you won't find anywhere else on the planet. My husband and I stocked up on a big shopping bag of fruit and veggies both times that we went. We didn't even know what 90% of the stuff was--we looked it up on the internet once we got home and ate it.

Also--Leonard's malasadas (I know that they have two stores on Oahu, don't know about the other islands), and as strange as this sounds, 7-11 in the islands has a pretty good hot snack bar that offers manapua, pork hash, and various musubis. Their musubis are the best that I had while there.

Write me if you'd like more ideas--I get the feeling that this isn't your first time going, and what I love about the islands are not the same things that might appeal to tourists--but I'd be happy to share. I have so many happy memories of the islands.

Tell us about the book!

How exciting! Let us know what it is called and when it is coming out.

Thanks, Suzanne

It's for a British press, a sort of package holiday goers guide to Hawaii. It comes out next September - I'll post the name and press when the manuscript is approved - I'm feeling a little superstitious at this point.

Cool!

I know exactly how you feel! I finally have a book about New York City coming out, and until it appeared on amazon.com (currently replete with errors, so I'm not going to link to it yet), I didn't want to say much about it.

Still, I am eagerly awaiting info and details on yours. I'm going to Hawaii and Oahu in December, so I am not going to be able to benefit from it before my trip, but it sounds great and I always enjoy what you write, so I'm looking forward to it!

The book won't be out...

But you can bet the blog will have lots to say about it. Also, don't miss Hawaiirama, it's a swell blog with loads of good local advice.
