Alter Your Routine, Improve Your Outlook

At one point or another, everyone feels the drag of the same old work routine. The commute, the hours and the job its self could all attribute to a lack of enthusiasm. Before we make any drastic decisions, however, we owe it to ourselves to get the root of the problem.

Finding a better, more fulfilling way to accomplish routine tasks could be all we need to improve our outlook.

If this sounds like you, maybe it's time to shake things up a bit. Guided by your Top Five Strengths revealed through Tom Rath’s StrengthsFinder 2.0, this process is quite easy. Simply infuse more of who you are into what you do. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Alter your commute - If your commute to and from work consists solely of commuting to and from work, your irritation is warranted. A little more interaction with others could be just the change you need. With three of my five strengths related to relationship building, it makes sense that I'd enjoy getting coffee from a local gas station in the mornings and/or stopping by the bookstore on my way home. In these activities, I have an opportunity to get to know the people working and living in my community. Feeling more connected improves how I feel about my commute. Now, it's your turn? If coffee and books aren't your thing, that's okay. What would make your commute to/from work more enjoyable? How soon can you implement those changes?
  2. Alter your schedule - With higher gas prices becoming the norm, more companies are allowing employees to either work from home (teleworking) or work four 10 hour days so that they can have the fifth day off (flex schedule). Though many are taking advantage of this opportunity, others may see the 'raised bar' associate with such a privilege as the source for more stress. If you're one of these people and gas prices aren't a major concern, consider working a regular 40 hour week or changing the time you arrive/leave work. Just because you weren't a morning person two years ago doesn't mean that's the case today. Do some brainstorming about your ideal schedule, talk to your manager about and then put it to the test. Question: What would you consider the perfect schedule? How can you make it a reality?
  3. Alter your responsibilities - Now that we've explored new ways to start our workday and the possibility of a new schedule, let's alter how we do the job. Try looking at your job from the eyes of someone that's never done the job before. How can you do it better? How can you make it more interesting? If you’re an analytical person, you might enjoy learning more about the system that calculates individual metrics. Armed with this knowledge, you could help your manager generate the numbers needed for the yearly evaluations. While it’s not a part of your job description, it gives you an opportunity to operate in an area where you have natural talent. That’s a win for everyone.

 

Now, don't let these exercises overwhelm you. Even if you have yet to take a strength assessment, you probably have an idea which activities you're naturally drawn to. Use that information to create a work life that inspires you to get out of bed every day. The smallest changes can produce the biggest impact.
