As a professional woman who must dress the part I am just fine with wearing Business Attire to work. It's a safe choice to wear a black suit that includes a skirt, a blouse, and a jacket. Respectable even. But, if I were honest, I'd say that it gets entirely too boring at times. It's like a uniform and I have plenty of them, but I also have some "fun" items, too. Mostly, this includes wearing brightly colored tights with some of my outfits or funky jewelry that spices everything up or even scarves. (I'd be remiss if I didn't disclose here that the lunch ladies at my school are enamored with my sense of style and they rib me, albeit in good nature, about it. When I found out they did this, I posed for them upon entering the cafeteria and now it's a running joke between them and me.)
There is no one specific style of fashion I like over any other, but on weekends my look changes dramatically. I like hats and scarves, I wear slogan t-shirts that just toe the line of "appropriate or not," and I get downright funky with my dresses. It's my free time and I want to spend it having as much fun as possible. This also helps in going out in public incognito as most of my students do not recognize me if they pass me on the street. If they do, there is an audible gasp followed by a, "Wow, you look so different outside of school!"
That's prompted me to search for fashion that is This Close to "Cool" with a dash of "Alternative" and that, I'd say, is my real style. The one that defines who I'm trying to portray. It makes me wonder, do other professionals do this, too? I mean, unless you live in a large city where that sense of style is appreciated (Helloooo, San Franciscans!), what do other working folks do to not stay so confined to the traditional sense of Working Clothes? Are there other women out there who like to kick it up a notch when they know their boss won't write them up for unprofessionalism? And why is it even defined as "unprofessional" if a woman wears a sundress to work paired with a lovely Spring sweater and a headband? I've even noticed that what I'm wearing affects how people treat me and this isn't limited to clothes. When I wear my hair natural and curly the impression is that it's a fun style or that I'm refusing to assimilate because this is, after all, natural for my hair to do.
With all that said, I'm always on the hunt for fun clothes. Lately, it seems as if I've hit the jackpot because fashion can be found anywhere. By anywhere, I mean the Internet. I couldn't possibly find these gems in just any old store here in Springfield, Illinois. Here are just a few of my newest finds that I love and dare myself to wear.
Anything by Motel fashion is delectable. As much as I'd love to wear just about any of their pieces to work, I know that some of it is pretty daring . Of all the clothes I see on that site, the Aztec Cardi dress is such a stunner that it makes me long for a pair of hot pink tights to wear with it so I can walk down the street while skipping. It's just hard to wear pink tights while I'm running a meeting. But this dress is so incredible that it just screams, YES I AM FUN TO THE MAX AND MAYBE EVEN A LITTLE BIT VALLEY GIRLISH.
Alternative Outfitters has a stunning array of different yet magnificent shoes that you actually can wear to work, out on the town, or to the grocery store. Wherever you wear them rest assured that no one else will have the shoes you're sporting. Just in case you feel the need to be super green and ecologically heroic, you can even buy faux suede vegan shoes. No, really! You can! My favorites are the Pink Studio brand in the "Paulina" style.
Danny and Libby Barnes make some awfully cute jewelry that will surely turn heads. Just recently, they debuted these blue rings that seem to glow. Much of their work revolves around taking items that people don't use anymore and then they recycle them into works of
