Amanda Trujillo, RN: Single Mother Fighting for Her Integrity
By kdhoffman2 on March 02, 2012
Everyone is a patient...either now or in the future. That's a fact. Another fact is that we all die. Sometimes our deaths can be made easier. Sometimes not.
Amanda Trujillo is a nurse who tried to make a dying patient's life and dying easier. She worked in Arizona and was fired in April 2011 after providing education and making a hospice care consult request for a patient with end-stage liver disease.
The patient had been in the hospital for 7 days and was supposed to get a pre-transplant evaluation. Unfortunately, the patient did not know anything about his/her liver disease, liver transplant or choices about treatment.
After Ms. Trujillo filled in the gaps in this patient's understanding, which is part of a nurse's training and practice, the patient asked her for a hospice team consult. Ms. Trujillo documented everything and left a note (it was night shift) for the primary physician.
These actions, education of a patient and requesting a consult by the hospice team, at the patient's request, angered the primary physician who demanded that she be fired and her license revoked. Ms. Trujillo's employer fired her and reported her to the Arizona State Board of Nursing.
Ms. Trujillo is a single mother of a 15 year old daughter. She is not wealthy. There are several blogs that have discussed her plight (Kevin, MD http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2012/02/physicians-care-amanda-trujillo.html is one example). But this is not just a story about a nurse. This is a story about the dignity of patients, a mother who wants her daughter to be proud of her, a fight for integrity. She is asking for help on her own blog http://www.amandatrurn.blogspot.com/ . Consider this story and ask yourself...Wouldn't you want a nurse to be your advocate in a hospital? Would you want to be a single mother without employment because you did your job? Wouldn't you fight for your integrity? Here is the interview she did on The Lou Show http://theloushow.com/2012/02/05/highlight-from-show-106-amanda-trujillo/.
