The Amazing Dress That Fits Every Body: The Wrap Dress

I love wrap dresses (especially the ones by Diane von Furstenberg) with a fiery intensity that borders on obsession. Want to know why? Because a quality wrap dress is the perfect article of clothing: it's classy, comfortable, forgiving and always appropriate. If you own one already, you know what I mean. And if you don't -- well, you don't know what you're missing!

The iconic DVF wrap dress got its start when Diane von Furstenberg used a printed jersey knit fabric to combine a ballerina wrap top with a skirt. And therein lies the magic: jersey is soft and flexible, which makes the dress comfortable, prints camouflage any imperfections (the original dresses were made in animal prints which made them very sexy) and the dress is almost infinitely adjustable, so the same dress can be worn as you fluctuate sizes. Von Furstenburg herself told the Huffington Post that the dress looks better on women (as opposed to teenagers or fashion models): "I would say the wrap dress is better when you are a bit curvier."

But mostly? A wrap dress is as simple to wear as a bathrobe. Yes: a bathrobe. Is your bathrobe comfortable? Yes. Can you wear it everywhere without getting horrified looks from strangers and worried comments from friends and family? Probably not. But a wrap dress? It willl make you look like a million bucks, and it's just as easy to wear.

Genius, I tell you.

A DVF wrap dress will set you back around $300, so it's not exactly a bargain. However, I think the Julian in black for $298 is a wise investment in your wardrobe -- with the right accesories you could wear this dress to the office, to a wedding, to a dinner out...It's a classic that won't fail you, even if you go up or down a few sizes here and there.

What if you can't spend $300 on a dress? Well, lucky you. Options abound. Here are a few:

This Jones New York wrap dress is $138 at Amazon; the simple black and white print makes it look notably like a DVF classic.

The print in this Alfani dress is perfection ($99), yes?

And this shorter (but still totally appropriate) Veronica M. dress ($94) is spring personified:

Do you own a wrap dress? When do you wear it?

Diane Von Furstenberg did not create the wrap around dress. In the late 60's, early 70's - There was some talk about a new designer, with some pretty interesting new designs. She catered to women, with bodies - not the typical 60's stick but real bodies. One day DVF went down to see what all the buzz was about. The name of the shop was Kristina Gorby. Evidently, DVF purchased several wrap around dresses (mostly knits, a few poly's and rayon's as well)took them and dismantled them. She then recreated the dress in her own fabric choice (the knit fabric though, was the key)...Tthe rest is history. She stole the design from another young designer and claimed it as her own.
By the way, Janis Joplin was a private client of Kristina's and she had several wrap around pant suits and dresses - some of which were made specifically for the Woodstock tour.
DVF is a fake.
BTW, I love wrap around dresses.

I do love the look of wrap dresses, especially DVF ones, and I've tried on dozens of them, even bought a couple, but they just look so unflattering on me. I have an hourglass shape, and to me they make me look like a milkmaid on top, and the belt at the waist just emphasizes the rear in back. Maybe they're better on either the really thin or really heavy ends of the spectrum, but they don't work for me!

the wrap dress does nothing for me. it just is not flattering, not even close. and believe me, i've tried... (but they totally look adorable on lots of other people).

I've got both true wrap & mock wrap style dresses in my wardrobe and they are the easily the "go-to" pieces when in a crunch. They are great transition pieces seasonally and they pack extremely well so they go with me on vacation.

Can't say enough good things about them!!!

I do love wrap dresses. My favorites are long sleeve and I wear them during winter with knee high boots. I agree that they pretty much flatter any figure.

I love my wrap dresses and feel like they fit a whole host of body types.  My favourites have come from Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft (very inexpensive for dresses!).
