You're through: Lauren Alaina wowed the judges with her rendition of Faith Hill's Like We Never Loved At All in last night's American Idol

After last week I wasn’t sure if the trio of judges would work for me. However after the last two nights of American Idol I have to admit I like the freshness of the show. It has a fun, relaxed element to it. The judges while so different in personality still fit together like a puzzle.  They each bring something different to the table. While Randy did step up tonight as more of a critic, Steven demonstrated sincere compassion towards the hopefuls and Jennifer seemed to be the more balanced of the three. I believe this trio truly wants to see people succeed in this competition.

In my opinion the talent this week far exceeded that of last week. Auditions opened in Milwaukee and first up was Scott McCreery. This 16 year old country singer has a deep rich bass tone to his voice. Randy compared him to Randy Travis. I predict this young man will go far in his singing career even if it’s not with Idol. I have to mention Jerome Bell singing Let’s Get it On by Marvin Gaye. He has “hot crazy vocals”, according to Randy. I enjoyed it too, not sure if it was the vocals or the song. Love the song.

I found myself turning down the volume several times as I just could not listen to some of these pitiful voices. Loud, off key, Idol hopefuls were belting out songs and really believing they had talent. At first I wondered where in the world would a person get an idea like that, and then I remembered. There are some voices only a mother could love, and this had to be what happened with these people. I suppose after years of mom telling you that you sang wonderfully, eventually you begin to believe it yourself. Then you go try out for American Idol and get humiliated on national TV. Maybe it shouldn’t go that far, and unforunately it does make for good entertainment. I remembered this because I used to tell my own son the same thing years ago when he had ideas of becoming a Backstreet Boy. “Oh yes son you have a great voice. Keep practicing.” He grew up and we had a heart to heart talk.  Understand I'm not a dream basher I just hate to see any young person get his/her hopes up only to have them crushed because he/she is running on a false perception. I think we need to encourage kids to go for the gold but keep it realistic, not unattainable.

In between all that “entertainment” there were a few more talented singers that came through. Molly Swensen, a Harvard graduate interning at the White House soulfully sang “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay”.  Chris Medina, a caretaker for his fiancée with a brain injury, let go and held the judges captive. Afterwards they asked him to bring his fiancée in to meet them and he did. Steven bent close to give her a hug and said, “He sings so good cause he sings for you.” I love his display of compassion.

Thursday  night we watched as Nashville's Idol hopefuls filed in and auditioned. In the midst of the cowboys, bikers, a beauty pageant winner, a prom queen and many others Adrienne Beasley came in to sing. Watch out for this 22 year old farm girl. She sings with conviction and a strong, gospel type, country, sound and it’s pure as rain.

Then the Georgia girl walked right in and stole the show from every contestant on both nights. I say this not because I am a Georgia girl too. I do not say this because I have waited for years to have the American Idol hail from Georgia. I don’t even say it because Lauren Alaina uses a word like “ya’ll”.  But according to Randy she has “natural God given talent”, Jennifer was brought to tears and Steven predicted “I think we’ve found the One.” The judges said it and I just happen to completely agree.
