Only a couple stand out in a surprisingly middle-of-the-road field.

I think I had higher hopes at the beginning of this season than are currently bearing out. I'm trying to figure out why that is. Much of it is song choice. All these people picking songs that are too old for them or too big for them. Some of it might actually be that, as Simon said last night, too many of them are sitting on a stool with a guitar and not really showing a lot of charisma. And some of it continues to be that with four judges talking, the singers actually do less singing. Maybe i just don't like 90 second versions of 4 minute songs.

Whatever the reason, Season 9 is not yet lighting my fire. How about you?

So, this is the big week: Who will make it to the Top 12, the big shoo? Here's the breakdown and my predictions.

The Top 8 Women:

1. Katie sang Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson

This was the best of Katie's three performances, mostly because it was the least annoying. No pulling faces and kitschy Vegas shoulder pops and head tilts. That being said, this was not good at all. if nothing else, Katie has always had her big, strong voice, but she sounded weak and pitchy, particularly during the first verse. I actually really like this song, but Katie made it dull. And despite it being a song that should have been very relevant and appropriate for her, she didn't really seem to have any kind of connection it...not one she could communicate to her audience anyway.

Bottom line: I have to believe she is really at risk finally. Right?

2. Siobhan sang The House of the Rising Sun by the Animals

I think Siobhan should have pulled a Bo Bice and down the whole damn thing a capella. It would have been more interesting and risky. As it was, it started out intriguing and got boring. I'm not sure what the judges see in Siobhan. She seems a bit too screamy and yelly, but without a ton of passion behind it. I thought this performance was almost robotic! It for sure didn't move me.

Bottom line: Oh, I think she's safe, because I'm clearly missing something. Clearly.

3. Lacey sang The Story by Brandi Carlisle

As you may recall, I bear a grudge against Lacey for slaughtering the song Landslide on the Top 24 night. So, it is with great resignation I admit: She did a good job with this. It was a perfect song choice for her vocal style. She sang it sweetly and simply and sincerely. Despite a slightly shaky ending, this was clearly her best performance. Now, she's still a very specific kind of artist who will probably only be able to sing very specific kinds of songs. How long with she be able to hold interest, given she's not incredibly deep or charismatic? Probably not long enough to win...

Bottom line: ...but long enough to make it into the Top 12. Clearly.

4. Katelyn sang I Feel the Earth Move by Carole King

Oh my. Can you say cheesy hotel lounge singer?  This was pretty God awful, and she's going to pay for it. The piano was just a distraction. Call it retro, in the worst possible way.

Bottom line: Katelyn is obviously in the Bottom 3, and I think she's likely on her way out the door.

5. Didi sang Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac

Now, I've liked Did all along and thought the judges were smoking crack to be so down on her. She has been the most interesting and believable to me since the Top 24. This performance sealed the deal for me. She's my favorite woman, for sure, even more than Crystal. She's really the only one who is interpreting the songs and who has something really alive going on

I had no idea about the defrauding children thing.  Wow.

Nordette, are you on Central Time?  On the West Coast, AI starts at 8pm.  So that's 10pm your time.

Also, I got the 7:45 time from the BlogHer time stamp on your post.  Hmmm...

Anyway, yeah, Idol hadn't started for us yet.  But it was okay for me because I never watch the results shows.  I find them incredibly boring.  So I just look up the results online as soon the show has aired on the East Coast.  Bloggers jump to post the results as soon as they know them.

And Elisa, I agree with you about Lilly.  While I do enjoy seeing what she's going to do, I never did feel she was genuine but putting on the quirky girl act.  Maybe I'm wrong.  We never know what's going on inside someone else, do we?

Paige and Katie are not just boring to me.  They actually make me cringe.

When I made that comment I thought it was 8:45 in Cali. I must have looked at my clock and read it wrong or I thought that Idol was on in Cali the same time it came on here, which is 7:00. What Idol fan was reading BlogHer with 15 minutes left to go in the show? :-)

Beth, Todrick's also been carrying some extra baggage, people opposing him in the competition because they think he defrauded some parents of money over a children's theater thing. Maybe that was a factor. Dunno.

LOL. I also wondered if Kara had something going on in her head that made her more emotional over Mike's performance.  .

Can't say Toderick's elimination was really shocking, given how down on him the judges have been, but Lilly? I was surprised. I don't think it's tragic... think her quirky coolness is only skin-deep, so I don't think we would have seen a ton of growth or versatility form her, but would have been much more interested to see what she did than a Katie or a Paige.

Okay, first let me say that I already know the results and I am stunned.  But that's all I'm going to say.  My comments will be as if I don't know the outcome.

Oh wait.  Nordette already gave it all away.  No fair, Nordette!  It was only 7:46 here in California! Okay, I'll just say whatever I want.

Katie:  Wish. She. Would. Go.  Maybe next week?

Lacey:  I totally disagree with you and the judges.  Hated her rendition of this song.  Maybe because it's one of my favorite songs by a woman.  I tend to get obsessed with songs I really like. When I first heard The Story, I stayed up all night listening to it on autorepeat.   (Yeah, OCD.  So?) Brandi Carlile's voice is raw and passionate and heartbreaking.  The first time I heard her voice crack in that one part of the song (you know the part) I gasped out loud.  Felt like she'd pulled my guts out.  So I just can't hear it sung like Lacey did... all sweetness and light.  Feh.

Katelyn:  I like her voice more than some others.  I'm sorry she never got her act together.  I would have rather seen Paige or Katie go.  Really.

Paige:  I don't know why the judges keep saying she has such a great voice.  Simon even said she had the strongest voice of all the girls.  What is he hearing that I am not?  She can't sustain a note to save her life.

Toderick:  I love him.  So he's Broadway?  I love Broadway.  I know, I know.  He might not be commercial.  I don't care.  I loved his version of that Queen song.  It doesn't surprise me that he's Adam Lambert's favorite.  So sad he is gone.

Aaron:  Totally agree with you.  He had no business singing that song, and it was all I could think about while listening.  Those words and that face... incongruous.  He should have gone!

Michael:  Loved his performance, but wasn't moved to tears like Kara was.  Honestly, I wondered if she were hormonal last night because I've had reactions just like that during certain times of the month.  I too was dismayed no one mentioned Kate Bush.  I didn't know there was a Maxwell version, so that whole thing confused me.  But I really liked it.

You know what?  I get so disappointed when I hear a contestant sing a song in a way that sounds really original to me, and then I find out it's a version that some other performer has already come up with.

I could say more about other performers, but I just don't have the energy.  My throat hurts and I need to go home and watch the X-Files on DVD.  Need. To. Do. That.

I was surprised by Michael. I liked the performance, but as I told a friend at my blog, his performances might improve with some humility.  And you're right, he was as theatrical as Todrick. But for the first time, since Andrew in Hollywood week, I paid attention to the guys this season. And I like Andrew still. I don't know why the judges give him such a hard time.

Todrick was voted off. Maybe too much too late? And he was Adam Lambert's favorite ( http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1632694/20100225/... ), according to MTV.

Mullet Banana, Alex, was voted off too. I feel a motherliness thing for that boy because he always seems afraid of himself and the audience. Fragile.

I had the same impression you did of Paige, her emotion came off as nerves. I thought she was going home too, but Katelyn went home instead.

I like Crystal. I hope her looking like she doesn't care doesn't do her in.  Overall, though, this is a season that's missing something. I see star potential but not necessarily mega-star potential. Maybe they're still in the oven baking.

Thank you for the link. :-)  I always enjoy your turns of phrase in your recaps.
