Sparkle (0)
Only a couple stand out in a surprisingly middle-of-the-road field.
I think I had higher hopes at the beginning of this season than are currently bearing out. I'm trying to figure out why that is. Much of it is song choice. All these people picking songs that are too old for them or too big for them. Some of it might actually be that, as Simon said last night, too many of them are sitting on a stool with a guitar and not really showing a lot of charisma. And some of it continues to be that with four judges talking, the singers actually do less singing. Maybe i just don't like 90 second versions of 4 minute songs.
Whatever the reason, Season 9 is not yet lighting my fire. How about you?
So, this is the big week: Who will make it to the Top 12, the big shoo? Here's the breakdown and my predictions.
The Top 8 Women:
1. Katie sang Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
This was the best of Katie's three performances, mostly because it was the least annoying. No pulling faces and kitschy Vegas shoulder pops and head tilts. That being said, this was not good at all. if nothing else, Katie has always had her big, strong voice, but she sounded weak and pitchy, particularly during the first verse. I actually really like this song, but Katie made it dull. And despite it being a song that should have been very relevant and appropriate for her, she didn't really seem to have any kind of connection it...not one she could communicate to her audience anyway.
Bottom line: I have to believe she is really at risk finally. Right?

2. Siobhan sang The House of the Rising Sun by the Animals
I think Siobhan should have pulled a Bo Bice and down the whole damn thing a capella. It would have been more interesting and risky. As it was, it started out intriguing and got boring. I'm not sure what the judges see in Siobhan. She seems a bit too screamy and yelly, but without a ton of passion behind it. I thought this performance was almost robotic! It for sure didn't move me.
Bottom line: Oh, I think she's safe, because I'm clearly missing something. Clearly.
3. Lacey sang The Story by Brandi Carlisle
As you may recall, I bear a grudge against Lacey for slaughtering the song Landslide on the Top 24 night. So, it is with great resignation I admit: She did a good job with this. It was a perfect song choice for her vocal style. She sang it sweetly and simply and sincerely. Despite a slightly shaky ending, this was clearly her best performance. Now, she's still a very specific kind of artist who will probably only be able to sing very specific kinds of songs. How long with she be able to hold interest, given she's not incredibly deep or charismatic? Probably not long enough to win...
Bottom line: ...but long enough to make it into the Top 12. Clearly.
4. Katelyn sang I Feel the Earth Move by Carole King
Oh my. Can you say cheesy hotel lounge singer? This was pretty God awful, and she's going to pay for it. The piano was just a distraction. Call it retro, in the worst possible way.
Bottom line: Katelyn is obviously in the Bottom 3, and I think she's likely on her way out the door.
5. Didi sang Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac
Now, I've liked Did all along and thought the judges were smoking crack to be so down on her. She has been the most interesting and believable to me since the Top 24. This performance sealed the deal for me. She's my favorite woman, for sure, even more than Crystal. She's really the only one who is interpreting the songs and who has something really alive going on
