Thank God we get to hear new-fangled music, am I right?

Last night's American Idol finally emerged from the 70s, and we not only survived, we thrived. I, for one, have been waiting to see these contestants as current pop stars over cover band karaoke singers for weeks now.

Now, the evening started, somewhat mysteriously, with a performance by all the rejects to date, singing Pink's "So What." Five women and one very off-key (if you can even call that singing) guy sang it with gusto, if not tunefulness.

I have only one question: So what? No, actually my one question was "Why?" Why did they do that? They don't usually do that. Were they just hoping having Pia back on stage would make us forget the uproar over her elimination?

Actually, I have another question: Is Mark Ballas from Dancing With the Stars dating Pia? I'm guessing yes, but I really don't want to visit People.com or the like to find out. I know my bloggy readers will know.

Another extraneous comment. Randy's shirt/sweater combination had some weird pattern that made it look like it was black with white lace. He was totally dressed like Church Lady. It was weird. That is all.

Finally: Last night was Jimmy Iovine's night. He gave the singers concise and spot-on feedback. And those who heeded it did very well. JLo was his companion on the other end, giving tougher love than she has the last few weeks.

On to the singing. With each singer accompanied by a "package" that made fun of their foibles. I, personally, don't think they should make fun of the foibles. I think they should HELP THEM FIX THEM!!!!!! Clearly, that's just me. Let's dig in, shall we?

1. Scotty sang "Swingin'" by LeeAnn Rimes

Seriously, don't make fun of the way he holds his mic. Make him stop. Anyway, this performance was a bit sleepy for zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Huh? What? Yeah, it was pretty boring, and JLo nailed it. What did he show us that was new, exciting, surprising? As she said: "With so many songs to choose from..." Which RJAck then just repeated almost word for word. Thanks Randy.

Bottom line: Scotty seems to have a huge fan base, and I feel like he's going to stick around a while. But I would really, really like him to show some growth or progress. I think he's safe.

2. James sang "Uprising" by Muse

OK, I'm probably going to inspire conflict here (I know at least one of BlogHer's Facebook friends will violently disagree), but I thought this was HORRIBLE. He was off-key 60% of the time, and the high screaming parts were painful. It was a cool arrangement, a cool visual presentation and a totally cool song choice. He should have nailed it; it should have been right up his alley, and I thought it was atrocious.

Bottom line: Like I said: I seem to be alone in my assessment of it. Even my S.O. really liked it, and he loves that song like I do. I would put him at risk, but I'm probably alone on that.

3. Haley sang "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele

This was a great song choice for her, but a risky one, given it's still a big hot hit. From a performance perspective, I felt I could see some nerves in her performance. She never seemed entirely comfortable or committed. But I thought she sounded amazing, and she did manage to add flourishes that made this song her own, even as I've heard Adele on the radio four times in the last day.

Bottom line: Haley's physicality, or lack thereof, is her big challenge, and I don't see it getting a ton better. But vocally she's very good, and way more interesting than some of the others. If she makes people uncomfortable for her, though, they won't vote, so I'm guessing she's at risk again.

4. Jacob sang "Dance with my Father" by Luther Vandross

Jacob once again showed more restraint, which is when I like him best. He also showed real emotion, not drama. For the record: I totally and completely disagree with RJack. Jacob does not need to go over the top; he needs to bring the authenticity. He does not need to wail up high; he needs to sing all smooth and velvety. I hope he listens to me, not RJack.

Bottom line: Meh. I don't think this will drive

The S.O. thinks Scotty is a "cartoon" of a country singer, and has the exact same reaction as you.

I quit visiting the Red Sox board (after a couple of months) years ago because it is so flipping childish, and Idol would be the same way in a wide open cyber arena.

Music is personal taste. What I love might sound like fingernails on a chalkboard to another.

I would have sent Jacob home. Stefano was actually starting to grow on me, and I still like Casey in a quirky way. I actually really dislike Scotty. It feels like he's doing a country singer impersonation, and his facial expressions bug me. As for the rest, they are all pretty meh. I just can't imagine any of them being an American Idol winner.

For me, I just could not get past Randy's shirt/sweater ensemble. Elisa, you nailed it. Totally The Church Lady! I also get distracted by:

Scotty: holding the mic sideways.

Lauren: wearing skirts which make me worry the camera angle will accidentally pan up and we'll get a view no one at home may be prepared to see.

Casey: His eyes are a little spooky and some of his facial expressions as he looks at J-Lo make me wonder, "Did they do a complete background check on this dude?"

Haley: Reminds me of the girl from last season who used to roar at the end of all of her songs, and I find it unsettling.

Jacob: The suits he wears. None of them have ever fit properly. It's an easy fix, and yet week after week he is in a poorly tailored ensemble.

Stefano: More sitcom material than Idol material and I keep casting him in the remake of "Who's the Boss?", but now that Elisa mentioned a show with Joey, I think that is perfect for Stefano.

James: The tail. The tie. Or what I've come to call it, The schmatte hanging from his ass.

I'm with you Elisa, they need to get rid of the "foible" and instead focus on the fix!

And, you know, at BlogHer we pride ourselves on being able to host civil debate, and that applies even to American Idol. I mean, have you ever checked out how nasty they get in their message boards over at Fox? I stopped going there years ago.

And look at us...far as I can tell we all actually disagree quite a bit on who we like and dislike, but we get along famously!

We're awesome!! Keep the comment-recaps coming!

James, Lauren, Scotty.

You're probably right :)

And Paul was the horrible icing on the dreadful cake.

his season of american idol, but his career is going strong. it's a lot better than kris allen's. i bought his album when it came out, and my girls and i love it.

stefano lasted longer than he should have. it was time for him to go home. i wouldn't have minded either one of the bottom two going home last night.

the bottom three last night would be exactly who they were and they had hayley safe first. i really thought she'd, and i WANTED, her to go home last night. taking on a new song and one by adele is risky. it was one risk that didn't work out for her, because it was terrible.

pia's elimination did not surprise me, because although she can sing, she had the personality of a stick. no one likes to be bored when watching someone, and seriously, i don't think we need another celine dion. one is enough. i'm sure her clothing choices didn't help her either. i felt like she was from the cast of jersey shore.

as far as the eliminated contestants go, i think they should have picked a song that paul could sing, too. he has his own unique style which i actually like.

i think james did well with his rendition of muse's song. he did it in his style. i love that he things of ways to make it different and his own. honestly, he was the best of the night. everyone else pretty much sucked or was boring.

the two girls aren't going to make it in the top 2. it's going to be a guy season.
my prediction for the final two: james and scotty. no matter if it's these two or not, these two will have careers and far more successful ones than whoever does win.

My mother is a big Scott fan. I'm not a fan of country music, but I do think he is a reasonable vocal facsimile of Randy Travis. Tuesday night he picked a mail it in song that offered no challenge. It was one of the three worst performances of the night, but IMO, given his past work, he's done enough to stick around. I suspect he'll do much better next week.

Lauren...sometimes the walls in our heads are the biggest impediment to moving forward, and right now it is her, and not the music that is holding her back. She does not believe in herself, and I'm not certain how you break someone through that. Anyone ever taken vocal lessons? Don't they do exercises with notes or something to test their limits? She is in danger if she does not burst past that wall this week.

James... in some ways it wasn't bad, but Adam Lambert has been there before, and performed better. James has the personality edge though, and he might get where Adam could not.

Jacob...I guess I look for Marvin Gaye in him, to show more...what is it Marvin did so well with the What's Going On album that shook the Motown world, and remains one of my all time favourites. Marvin took the restraints off, showing a combination of lament, sadness, depression, outrage, and a will to persevere and opine. He doesn't have to sing Marvin, but he should channel him. And I guess that is a long winded way of saying I agree with you.

Stefano, if Simon were around, he would sum him up with a phrase I've yet to hear this year: a good cruise ship performance. At least, that is how it felt to me, and is probably why he's gone.

Casey... I just don't know what to make of him.

And Haley. When Ryan announced she was going to do Adele, the first thought in my mind was 'ruh roh'. Adele can flat out sing, and she has blasted her way into popularity on the strength of some of the most powerful vocals I've heard in a long long time. I get goose bumps when I hear her voice. Can you imagine being somewhere, just say in someone's living room and she decides to sing? I recall at Denise's (I won't say the number) birthday party and hearing Melissa Ferrick play without any amplification whatsoever. It was a musically intimate performance for 25 people, a rare look at a pro recording artist, and stripped of all the production, it was superb. I picture Adele doing that, without a mike, and her voice would own the room.

When Haley came out, she was in awe of Adele, as so many of us are. Where Haley shined was in the middle, when she veered away from Adele and added her personality to the song. I wished wished wished she would follow that trail, but she swerved back to a similar cover. It was competent, but had she taken that middle kernel and expanded it to the whole of the song, she might have blown away the field. Another of the younguns that needs a dose of 'really believe you are really good' to move forward. It was the gutsiest choice of the night, reasonably done, and people seemed to get that it was.

Hey Elisa
Again good analysis even though I can't say I agreed with you this week on the individual level. But you were spot on for who would get left behind. Congrats. I thought Haley would go this week rather than Jacob even though I was no enamoured with his Vandross selection. I was sure Stefano was safe this week. What do I know? I am glad however that he didn't go out crying.

Give me a heads up on who you think the last two standing will be. I think it will be Casey and Lauren ;)

I'm sure you're right. And this makes me sad.

Also, perhaps the first number was a tricky way for the producers to say to us, "Seeeeeee? It's not a total catastrophe that these guys were booted because they obviously suck. See! See! We/you weren't wrong!" Because, wow....that was horrific...and made me think a lot less of all of them.
