An American Woman vs. Martha Stewart

First of all....this has no dislike or hated directed at Martha Stewart. She has made her world what she wants out of it and I give her credit for her hard work.  I subscribe to her magazines, but I start to wonder...

Why am I finding less and less of what I can really relate to in each one that is mailed to me?

It's because what she wants and what I want are on either end of the spectrum.

The American woman, wife and mother tends her garden. We plant flowers, herbs and prune bushes. Some of us mow the grass.....but we don't have a crew of gardeners.

I have two homes. I bought a home with my husband almost 4 years ago. I had my own home at that time, but the market was so bad, I could not sell it for my price. My daughter lives there with her family. Each home has two bathrooms, a family room and three bedrooms. Each home has nice yards and a garage....but I don't own a 1000 acre ranch in the west, a mansion in California or a huge farm in Iowa.

We have linen closets and if we are lucky, we have one in each bathroom. I read an article about Martha's linen closet. It's as big as half of one of my bedrooms. The shelves are trimmed in lace and the sheets are folded just so and each set for the bed is tied in ribbon, like a present...but I don't have maids in my home.

I love to cook and bake for my family. My husband and children love what I make. I make breaded pork chops, salads, make a good pot of coffee, bean soup, bake cakes and cookies and use mixes quite a bit. We grow a garden and use what we grow. I buy in bulk and freeze to help our finances.....but I do not have chefs in my home.

I craft and God gave me skills and talent in that area. I sew and I make quilts and have created some of my own designs. I cut wood with my own tools, and tole paint. I make a lot of my gifts, because I want to. I make my own potpourri, buy old furniture and refurbish it.....but  I don't have a monthly magazine with all of my ideas going all over the world.

I have a good life. I have friends and family and I am surrounded by people that love me and that I love. I am a Christian and love God and His word....but I don't know any movie stars.

I decorate for Harvest and use sunflowers and scarecrows. I make turkey for Thanksgiving with all the trimmings and it's made with my hands and my heart....but it's not served to you in 8 courses.

I decorate for Christmas with santas, snowmen and angels. I don't decorate with glass and silver and gold. I have 3 or 4 trees. I decorate my bathrooms with ceramic trees, and try each year to make a lot of my ornaments. I use a Christmas quilt on my table.  I light candles for the family members that can't be with us, so we have them in our hearts and minds. I start shopping in the summer to find deals and clearances. I don't buy diamonds or use a charge card, but I will buy or make you something you will need and want. I bake and cook and you will never leave my home hungry and most of the time, take enough food with you for your dinner the next day. I have family meals and we may bring out the guitars or play games. We may watch a Christmas movie or play carols on the stereo. We gather, we love.....but I don't have sophisticated, black tie dinner parties with crystal wine glasses, linen tablecloths and napkins and french food, served by servants.

I buy my clothes at thrift stores, department stores or yard sales. I wear blue jeans, boots and tee shirts most of the time. I have special clothes for special occasions. I have nice jewelry and some gems and diamonds....but I don't have clothes, jewelry, purses or shoes I have paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for.

I have a treadmill and a road to walk on....but I don't have a home gym.

I don't regret not having all of the ammenities and people working for me. I don't regret not working at a big corporate office. ( I drove a school bus for 20 years and I loved it) I do not care if I sit down to a meal prepared by gourmets every night. I do not care that

I loved your post, Reda! And you know what? I would trade places with Martha Stewart, but I would love her home, even though I wouldn't want maids touching my things. I like doing my own cleaning and cooking. :)

I'm sure her home is exactly up my alley. I just think that some of her ideas are so out of reach and far fetched for the "everyday people." I told you in one of my posts that after my divorce, I lost the feeling, security, warmth and safety of home. It was for a good 8 years. I had a place to sleep, cook and eat, but the security was gone. I know you understand and I think that's why I post about home, my book is about home and I work hard at making it a place I appreciate. We are kindred spirits, my dear!

How I enjoyed reading your post! In every line I can feel the gratitude and contentment you have in your home. If we have that, fairly good health, faith, and some people to love, we have all we need.

I like looking at the ideas in magazines, but I don't feel the need to "go after" many of the luxuries. I bet if Martha could have your contentment, she might consider trading places (not that you would agree to trade).

One of the magazines I read, Country Living, had a "vintage" lamp in a recent decorating photo just like one we have-- my husband got it at an auction for a pittance. Funny, with a little patience sometimes we can have the "look for less."

Try Country Sampler Magazine. I subscribe to a few, but it's the best.

Thank you for reading my posts and thanks for meeting me on Virginia's.

And I, you. I love the sweet, nice, intelligent and funny ladies on here. This place is better than going to email or facebook!

I love that Melanie, Martha Stewart "might consider trading places." I so agree, but she can't have it! *Smiling!* isthisthemiddle
