I have longed to see Amish country for many years.

And tara~
I was in Lancaster Pennsylvania for a long weekend last October.

Personally I loved it.
It was a great weekend,
and I want to visit it again~

There were so many things to see, food was amazing,
and people were super friendly.

The Amish live in a similar way how their ancestors lived when they arrived from Europe and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania nearly 300 years ago.
Pennsylvania Amish lives simple and non-materialistic life, with horse-powered vehicles, without electricity.

The rationale of Amish community for banning electricity is that television will jump into their lives, once electricity is allowed.
Then also will computer and internet follow subsequently.
That is why Pennsylvania Amish community opted to be disconnected from the modern society.
They pursue a simple and slow life, which focuses on God, their family and the entire Amish community.

SunbonnetSmart.com Hi Robin, thanks for your comment and compliments! I'm touched!

I don't know why, but also have I been so curious of Amish. I really needed to go down there and see their community up close!

It seems to me that many of us are sort-of enamored with the Amish lifestyle, though I'm sure it would take lots of getting used to, for us city folks used to modern conveniences. But as a Christian believer, I know why a lot of us, including Muah,

romanticize the Amish life. :)

Loved the post. Thank you for sharing!

HomeRearedChef Hi Virginia, Amish community are pro-actively denying the modernization. They refuse to be influenced by TV and internet. It amazed me. Can you imagine a life without internet?

They lighten the house with propane-powered lamp, only because they deliberately cut the electricity, to deny modern influences.

Surprisingly only about 10% of Amish youngsters abandon Amish lifestyle. The young Amish girls are so beautiful with their hair never cut in their lives. I'm sure they would be so popular with guys if they become Americans! (I heard from the guide that Amish people call all non-Amish people "American" :))

tennismama I've heard that not many will abandon their lifestyle, but I had no idea it was that low. When life gets to hectic and crazy, I find myself often telling my hubby "lets go and join the Amish," to which he always replies, "Just say when."

My husband, a man of simple pleasures, and extremely resourceful and handy, would very easily adapt. There I go again, romanticizing! :)

Oh yeah, I'm sure that you lovebirds will romanticize in Amish environment! Let me know when too. I'll drive down to meet brand new members of Amish community! :)
