Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and now Amy Winehouse.  The brilliant and notoriously troubled singer tragically joined the the 27 Club this morning.

The London Metropolitan police released the following statement, which doesn't mention the Grammy-winning artist by name:

"Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.

On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained."

The LA Times confirmed the story:

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the [Winehouse] home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

Oh Amy.   Amy Amy Amy.   I hardly know what to say.   Her talent was so huge, and although she never seemed to find peace with her genius or her success, her passing will undoubtedly leave a gaping hole in music history.

It feels futile to go on about her troubled marriage to ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil  or her recent stint in rehab.  Hers was a wild ride at breakneck speed that felt almost certain to end in tragedy and we couldn't look away.  We know what led her here.

Amy Winehouse passed into immortality today.  She will be missed, but her legacy will live on forever.

She was talented and brilliant. She didn't make the leap of really loving herself and finding direction. The drugs did not fill the hole in her heart.

Unlike the others in the "27" club, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. I don't believe it was related to drugs or alcohal consumption, although it's no secret that he and his brother Greg did plenty of both. In my opinion, Duane was one of the greatest guitar Gods of all time. Rolling Stone agreed, as they had him on the Top 100 best guitar players list, along with Hendrix and Clapton. Duane Allman made the top 10. I wish he had lived.

...that they were all 27. I'm 27. Kinda creepy and sad. So much talent, gone too soon.

as my eldest, and that hit me as well yesterday. It really makes you take pause.

There is life around us that marches on, what with those who come and pass from our life and from life. Any life lost leaves my heart heavy, and sometimes it rips it to shreds. Yesterday was one of the latter.

I wouldn't characterise myself as a huge fan of Amy. But I was rooting for her with every ounce of my being. When I saw the Belgrade clip earlier this year, it felt ugly, it felt... I described it elsewhere as feeling like those weeks in the summer of 1993 when those of us who are Celtics fans watched Reggie Lewis try to overcome the shock of being told his career was over at the same time medical professionals were giving him conflicting information. Tragedy was the result there, too.

I'm an admitted rescuer. I don't like to see people hurting, like to see them overcome. Sadly, it doesn't always work that way.

I hope Amy has the peace that eluded her in life.

On a different note, Duane Allman made it to 25, never even got to year 27. He rarely gets mentioned, but in my lifetime, he's one of the top five rock guitarists. I'll give him the two years and an honourable mention.

Laurie, you worded it perfectly. "People who...live large like she did, often want to do the opposite of die. It's just if they could only figure out how to live" You are so right, they have such a hard time fitting their larger than life personalities and talents into the everyday world.

I should have emphasized my first thoughts were just that, and not processed or thought through, just gut reactions. But you really capture a profound truth for those individuals who are suffering.

The only person who knows what it was like to be Amy Winehouse or what her wishes were likely died today.

Addiction sucks. It's complicated. People who suffer from it, who live large like she did, often want to do the opposite of die. It's just if they could only figure out how to live. (And I will only tell you that I understand this deeply from multiple perspectives.)

I saw her live once, five years ago. I can't believe she was just now 27. I find this very, very sad, just as I do whenever anyone dies for any reason, really. She was a true talent.

She is the same age as my children, so with each of her disasters I counted my blessings that they were so healthy.

It brought tears to my eyes to read Tony Bennett's lovely tribute to her. Praise from him is praise indeed.

But I have to say my first thoughts were "I'm surprised it took this long." and then "She got her wish." Hopefully she is finally at peace.
