Angry Black Mom

A few weeks ago, I took my 2 year old daughter Aneksi to the Staten Island Zoo. It's a small zoo, but it was a nice day, and I really don't like to keep her cooped up in the house. After walking around, I took aneksi to the reptile exhibit [which she didn't like, by the way] and as we were leaving, there was this little white girl who approached aneksi. Aneksi smiled, waved, and began to move closer, and the girl's mother immediately snatched her child away. I stood there, and looked at this woman. Black folks know what I'm talking about, and she started babbling about how her daughter is always running off, etc.. I said "right Bitch" and kept walking.

Staten Island has alot of veiled racism like this, and this is one of the reasons why I don't want to live here any more. I was born and raised in Harlem, so the vibe was completely different. I won't say there's no racism in the city, becasue there is, but on Staten Island, if your not lily-white, a republican, catholic, or pro-life  [I'm none of these things] people tend to look at you sideways.

My childhood was a pretty multi-cultural one. Thats one of the benefits from growing up in NYC. I had friends who were latino, asian, african..etc. I will pretty much socialize with anyone who isn't an asshole. I know I can't shield Aneksi from every boogeyman that awaits around the corner, but there are moments when I wish some white folks would "get over" themselves
