Today we are proud to announce the BlogHer '09 International Activist BlogHer scholarship program and invite you to submit yourself or your favorite international activist BlogHer for consideration for this scholarship.

UPDATE: Nominations are now closed for this scholarship. Thanks to everyone who submitted amazing activist women for this scholarship. We will be notifying winners on 2/15/09.

In 2008 BlogHer won the Anita Borg Social Impact Award from the Anita Borg Institute. The Award came with $10K in prize money. After community discussion we decided to spend the award money offering five scholarships to bring activist women bloggers from around the world to BlogHer '09 this July 24-25 in Chicago to present their work.

If you or someone you know is a woman blogger, outside the United States, blogging to raise awareness, consciousness or funding to change their community, region, country or the world, then please nominate yourself or such a blogger to win one of these five scholarships.

Scholarship winner will receive:

  • A full 2-day conference pass to BlogHer'09
  • Round trip airfare to and from Chicago, IL for the BlogHer '09 annual conference
  • 3 nights stay at the Chicago Sheraton during the conference
  • The opportunity to present their work during a session at BlogHer '09
  • The Criteria:
If you review the nomination form you'll see that we're asking you to describe not only the mission of the blog/blogger and how they are affecting change In Real Life, but also how they could benefit from their BlogHer experience.

    How Winners Will Be Chosen:
We have formed a committee of six to help choose the scholarship winners. Three of the committee members are BlogHer employees:

  • Julie Godar, BlogHer Managing Editor
  • Jenifer Scharpen, BlogHer Publishing Network Producer
  • Denise Tanton, BlogHer Community Manager
  • And three of the committee members are these amazing, well-respected women representing the worlds of media, global activism and tech:

  • Kim Pearson, journalism professor and BlogHer contributing editor
  • Georgia Popplewell, Managing Director at Global Voices Online
  • Nelly Yusupova, CTO of WebGrrls International
  • The Timeline:
Because getting visas can be a huge issue, depending on the nation of residence, our timeline is quick and short.

Nominations Open: Now! Submit nominations here
    Nominations Close: January 31, 2009
    Winners Notified: February 15, 2009

Wonderful idea, and I am more than happy to put this into the next newsletter to our 13.5K members on the Global Business Women ( https://www.xing.com/net/globalbusinesswomen/ ) Forum - I know there are several women on that list from Asia and Africe who probably are thrilled with this opportunity!

Great work and looking forward to summer ;)

This is a great idea for using the award money to inspire bloggers, writers and readers to show off their work.

As a blogger from Sydney Australia I got super excited about the international scholarships.

However I quickly realised my blog on reality TV was far to vacuous to meet the criteria.

The conference sounds amazing. If you want someone to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of blogging in a large country with a small population I will gladly volunteer.....

Keep up the great work. This network is great.
