Announcing the BlogHer '10 Party Plan!!

You may have already seen the BlogHer party tweets flying around, so allow me to explain this year's party plan and how it all came together.

A little background:

Last year, we listened to all of the post-BlogHer '09 feedback and mulled over how to respond to it, both in the moment, and with policy changes for BlogHer '10. One of the things we committed to handle differently was BlogHer parties.

So this year, as promised, we've made some changes. The only parties that will be within the conference space from Thursday to Saturday are "official" parties. Friday evening we'll host the Voices of the Year gala welcome reception. And on Thursday and Saturday, we are co-producing a series of community parties with different bloggers in the community.

Many of these are already...or are well on their way to being ... BlogHer traditions. Some are new. Each party will reflect the vision of our bloggy co-hosts. And each party will come under BlogHer policies for RSVPs, capacity planning and sponsor involvement, if any. Although each party has a capacity limit (so no over-crowding!), each party is open to any BlogHer attendee with an appropriate conference pass. And any sponsor of any party will be a conference sponsor, meaning they are contributing to the entire conference, helping us both keep prices low and let more bloggers in off the waitlist if possible.

Some important details:

All of these official BlogHer parties will be hosted on-site at the Hilton New York and are open to all registered conference attendees. You must have at least a Cocktail Parties Only pass in order to access these events (if you don’t have one, there’s still a few left at http://blogher10.eventbrite.com/), and please note that Friday Only or Saturday Only passes will only grant access to parties happening on that day of the conference. And while all of these events are open to all conference attendees, space is limited, so RSVPs are required. Finally, because we do hope to let in more bloggers off the wait list soon, we have held back some slots on all parties, and any that are or become filled to capacity will open up again for more RSVPs once when we also open the waitlist. Every BlogHer attendee deserves the right to party!!

Our recommendation:

While it would be tempting to just sign up for every single party (and show up to only half because, after all: You're only human) we do encourage you to visit each party organizer site we link to below. Check out the community, their party plans and visions. There's a party for everybody and everybody gets to party ... just not everybody all at once everywhere! :)

And now, the Official BlogHer Party Plan!:

Thursday, August 5th

Social FiestaSocial Fiesta, 6-8pm: Join us to celebrate Latinas and Hispanic culture at the Social Fiesta.  We'll be reveling in the different Latin flavors, music, colors and art, with plenty of food and drinks, and of course, lots of dancing!  What better way could there be to kick off BlogHer '10 than with a fiesta de culturas? Hosted by Latinas in Social Media, learn more about this event and how you can RSVP here.

People's PartyThe People’s Party, 7-10pm: Whether you're a mommy, political, green, life, fashion or any other kind of blogger, all are welcome at the 4th Annual People's Party.  Come one, come all and celebrate all bloggerhood to kick off BlogHer '10. The People's Party is hosted by: Velveteen Mind, The Bloggess, IzzyMom, Motherbumper and Oh, the Joys! Learn more about The People’s Party and how you can RSVP here.

QueerosphereQueerosphere, 9-11pm: The second annual Queerosphere is held in honor of the 100th anniversary of one of the most significant events in lesbian literature and in the history of the arts: Alice B. Toklas moving into the Parisian apartment of Gertrude Stein in 1910. Queer bloggers and allies will gather in a special salon at the Hilton for cocktails, coffee and conversation -- to connect and celebrate on the eve of the conference. Learn more and RSVP here

Friday, August 6th

BlogHer Voice of the Year GalaAs mentioned above, Friday night will be the one-stop, pull-out-all-the-stops Voices of the Year gala welcome reception. We'll reveal more details about this party as we can, but there's only one thing

Thanks for clearing this up, Elisa.

This is my first time at BlogHer and I am so excited to go. Currently, however, I am a bit disheartened because I got into ZERO parties. I tried to RSVP to all of them and got wait-listed for each and every one of them. I appreciate the "Chill Space," but would have liked to at least get confirmation for one party.

So, here's the scoop:

On Saturday night there is one big open non-RSVP BlogHer party, called the BlogHer Chill Space...featuring food, drink, background music and a great place to hang and network and talk.

There are also four community parties co-produced with different segments of the community. Those parties have space limits and simply cannot hold all 2400 attendees. So there was a first-come, first-served RSVP process. A couple of them are smaller (300-400 people) A couple of them are bigger (500-800) people, and they're staggered through the evening.

Each RSVP-requiring party will have staff at the door keeping track of people entering and exiting (with little counter clicker gadgets).

They will always keep a cushion of capacity, so that two things can happen:

1. If the party isn't full, those without RSVPs can attend
2. If someone *with* an RSVP shows up, they won't be kept out because we let in people *without* RSVPs.

If you don't have an RSVP, but are allowed in because there's space, you'll get your drink ticket at the door.

If you have a bunch of drink tickets because you RSVP'ed to a bunch of parties, you can spend them any way you want over the weekend.

I hope that makes sense. It's a new method we're trying this year...partially because last year there were some over-crowding issues in some on-site parties.

So, I think there are a couple of different answers to your question.

Some people like to dress up for the parties...especially if they don't get much opportunity to dress up at home. So, sure, many will be in some form of cocktail dress or something a little more fancy.

I am not a clothing changer myself. I get dress once in the morning, in something I would call somewhat business'y, since I have to get up on stage. But I don't change at night. No time for that for me. I don't know if I own a cocktail dress :)

Other people stay casual...especially during the day. Jeans and a tee, and maybe you add a nice cardigan or jacket at night.

There are 2400 people there...80% of whom will probably be nothing like you. That's the beauty of it :)

But I can assure you: "Gala" doesn't mean you should put on a ballgown!!

Unless you're into that ;)

I don't believe Lori has instilled a dress code for the registration desk. Jeans and a tee would probably be fine. As would anything more dressed up.

Hope that's helpful.

Clearly I'm a newbie! I just reviewed the pre-conference guide and proceeded to try to register for parties. I'm on wait lists for all. Can you give us an update on the status of the wait list situation for parties?@grrlgonegreen
Thanks much and see you all soon!

Hi Elisa,
I have asked and asked so many different ppl, but haven't gotten an answer, can you please help me with this issue....
What the heckles do I wear? lol
I don't mean the normal everyday stuff, I mean the parties that blogher is co-hosting, is it mommy attire (t-shirt & jeans) or a little nicer?
my biggest one is the Gala, because hubby and I have different opinions on what "Gala" attire is, lol.
pls give me an idea ;)
Thank you,
Lily
and yes, in case you can't tell, I AM a newbie, lol.

btw, now that I have your attention, I will be @ registration desk working, is there certain type of clothing
I should wear? thanks!

Hi Christy, understand your concerns, and I'd like to update everyone on our plan:

Because we did hope and expect to be able to expand our attendance and bring people in off the waiting list again this year, we held in reserve a cushion of tickets on every party. Our goal was to avoid exactly the problem you mention: Attendees who got entirely locked out.

Now that we're almost done bringing people in from the overall conference waitlist, we have also opened up the waitlist on 6 out of 8 of the parties on Thursday and Saturday nights.

Just about everyone who was waitlisted for those parties should be able to sign up now.

For the other 2 parties we are indeed going to do a review and figure out if anyone waitlisted has been unable to get into any of the parties, so we can prioritize them.

To add to that, of course, we will have a completely open and RSVP-free place to hang out in the BlogHer Chill Space on Saturday night. There will be food, drink, music, and a chill atmosphere in which to hang.

In these ways we hope to make sure everyone has a party to attend, and there's a party for everyone. :)

I think a change was definitely needed in the party plan, but this new plan has some (presumably) unintended side effects. I received invites to several of the parties. Within just a day or two, they were filled. I'm concerned that bloggers who are new to BlogHer will miss out on parties entirely.

If the parties are going to be so restricted, I think there should be a lottery system and possibly even a party-ticket-per-person max. I assume most folks just registered for everything and will bop in and out throughout the night. That's how it's been done in the past.

As for the parties this year, may I suggest sending a note to party attendees a few weeks before to confirm their attendance? That will remind bloggers who have accepted private party invites, or who have had a change of plans to bow out and open a spot for waitlisters.

As it stands, I think a lot of "in" bloggers will have RSVPs for parties, as well as private functions, and newbies will find themselves feeling even more left out of the fun than in past years.

We will revisit the party waiting lists once all the registrations are in for the people we could let into the full conference off the wait list for that.

We anticipate most people on most party lists will be able to attend.

Stay tunes :)

I failed to register for any party in time, so I'll be chillin' with you Denise! Not sure how I like this "better register within 2 days or you'll miss out" approach. Some of us are not glued to Twitter or on top of things to this degree.

I hate so sound like a grumpy old lady, but I want to ask all party givers to consider turning any music they have playing at their parties down - way down if possible.

Every party I went to last year the music was so loud that I had to yell in someone's ear just to be heard. It made networking almost impossible. I lost my voice Thursday night and the whole weekend because I was constantly yelling over loud music!

If you can't turn down the music to ambient level I understand. If that's the case, any throat lozenge companies want to sponsor me? :)

I'm new to BlogHer this year. Hoping to get a full pass off the waitlist. Need a sponsor, too. The organization system for RSVPing for the parties is smooth sailing. Thank you from a BlogHer newbie!

I'm thrilled with the set up. I went BlogHer PartyLite as I really want to do some other things in the city with a bit of free time. And I have to hang out with Denise at the Chill Space because she has Cheese Nips.

But I still have no idea what to wear. At this point, it's yoga pants. ;)

I thought the new system was brilliant. I went to sign up yesterday and loved that it streamlined the whole process.

I did register for some parties but... you'll find me mostly in the Chill Space. With Cheese Nips and coffee. Maybe some Red Vines. Stop by, say hello.
