Announcing BlogHer '14 Keynote Speaker: Grammy-Nominated Comedian Tig Notaro

BlogHer Original Post

I'm thrilled to kick off 2014 in jubilant fashion with another keynote speaker announcement for BlogHer '14: Comedian Tig Notaro will join us at BlogHer '14 and discuss her groundbreaking brand of comedy.

While her work as a comedian and comedy writer alone would make for a fascinating (and funny) discussion of the craft of humor writing, there is much more to Tig's story.

Late in 2012, Tig was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she turned that deadly serious stuff into comedy gold during a stand-up act in Los Angeles, delivering a hilarious and heart-wrenching monologue that was instantly legendary. Comedian Louis C.K. dubbed the act one of the best stand-up performances he ever saw, and helped Tig to self-publish Tig Notaro LIVE, which has since been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The album has gone on to sell more than 120,000 copies, unheard of for comedy albums these days. Most recently, Tig scored a book deal with Ecco, an imprint of Harper Collins.

Tig's bold decision -- not just to take her cancer diagnosis public, but also to craft brilliant humor around it -- reminds me of so many in the BlogHer community, people who share their authentic selves online, often dealing with trying life circumstances, and always walking that indefinable line between public and private selves.

Add to that the ways in which Tig is working in the world of traditional comedy writer (and soon-to-be author) while also trying to find new ways to get her work out there as an independent artist, creating alternative paths to monetize her work by selling her work directly to fans. Sounds like a lot of what our community is facing and managing again, don't you think?

It's safe to say Tig has become successful by being simultaneously groundbreaking, hilarious and brave -- much like our other announced keynote speaker, Jenny Lawson.

Tig's got a long bio of comic bona fides, on the big and small screen -- let's not forget to mention her role on-screen and in the writer's room for Inside Amy Schumer -- and a story that's beyond compelling. I can't wait to learn more from the mind of a leader of today's new vanguard of comedy!
