Antiquing and Weekend Plans
By Missouri Musings on January 18, 2013
Good afternoon everyone! Hope this finds you ready to begin the weekend.
Yesterday, I spend the day antiquing with my mother which can be fun and stressful. You see, my mother is very opinionated and if she doesn't think you should buy something then that's the way it is. Keep in mind that I'm 51 years old and have made plenty of good decisions on my own. Sometimes it's just easier to ignore things....until I get home and then I can vent to the Hubster! lol My mother is 72 and she prefers to go to local Antique shops close to home. I've gotten a little bored and wanted to venture out and that we did. We traveled to Northern Missouri, about 5 miles from the Iowa Border. My definition of antiquing is going to stores that truly have things that are at least as old as I am and older, fairly clean, and not a dump. Let me tell you... we thought we'd made a big mistake. The first few places should have not been on an Antique advertisement. Holy Cow, I thought I was walking into an episode of Hoarders. If you are looking for filthy, chipped, and broken down items that have no purpose - this would have been your place. Don't get me wrong, I love garage sales, flea markets, Salvation Army, and auctions - this was disgusting. The next place was much better, but apparently they don't want to sell anything. Much of their items were well over valued and everything I picked up had a chip or was broken. At this point, we're thinking we should have stayed home. Then we happened into the Enchanged Frog (http://www.visitmo.com/enchanted-frog-antiques.aspx). We were greeted when we entered (I like that) and occasionally the shop keepers would come around and take the items you had to the front for you (I like that a lot). If you like antiques from every era, furniture, glassware, toys, sport collectibles, etc. - you need to go here. I was able to add to my Pyrex collection and pick up some older sewing notions. I use the sewing items to decorate my sewing room with various framed patterns, jars of old buttons, quilts, etc. Luckily, the Hubster didn't mind take out Chinese for dinner - I was worn out!
When I started this blog, I said I would share with you my newest quilt project and fabric. In the mail yesterday was the Moda Layer Cake that I ordered from Crazyquiltgirl Fabric Shop (www.crazyquiltgirlfabricshop.com). I highly recommend this shop - quick turn around, reasonable prices, and a wide selection. I had such a hard time trying to figure out which layer cake I wanted to begin this project and finally had to ask for help to narrow down my choices. I'd like to introduce you to my selection:
Now that you've seen my selection, I have to tell you about the project. A few of my former teacher colleagues/friends are doing a Dixie Diary: Civil War Quilt Along and I decided to join in. It's one block a month; so I have some catching up to do. If you think you'd like to join us; you can get all the fabric requirements and 1st month pattern here:
I think I can work on this and still get some of my other projects started. Let me know if you decide to join, I'd love to see what you finish each month!
Ahhhh, the weekend! The Hubster says that everyday is the weekend since I retired. That's actually not true, but I'm not the one that gets up at 5:30 every morning. Tonight, we are joining my brother and sister-in-law at a fabulous restaurant (Gaslight Grill - http://gaslightgrill.com/). We will not only have a great dinner, but our niece (their grand-daughter) is visiting from New York and will be performing there. She is not only beautiful, but has that Blues/Jazz voice that runs chills down your back. Tomorrow, our daughter is giving me a new hair style and color - she is a professional, so I'm not worried! Then, tomorrow night is....Girl's Night. A couple of my friends and I are going to a Gary Allen CD Release Party/Concert - cannot wait. It should be a lot of fun!
Since Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and a holiday for some - do you have any exciting plans? I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to join my blog.
So, in the words of Christian Grey (The Shade of Grey series)...."laters, baby"!
