any quarter lifers out there?
by resisting yuppiedom

just wondering if there's any pre-yuppie phase gals out there on this site. i know there must be other twentysomething year olds like me, trying to decide on a professional career, lingering on the edge of grownupville and not wanting to dive right in.

i know you're there...you're in grad school, or you're off travelling somewhere or you're doing a second degree, or you're holding up off your partner from proposing because you're scared shitless. us pre-yuppie, quarter lifers tend to be plagued by identity issues, class issues, political issues...a lot of issues, you get the idea. we think we're the first generation to be SOOOOOO different from the previous and you know our parents and our older friends, .

we're the kind of people that tend to drive the mommies crazy because we whine about life and really all we have to worry about in life is ourselves. but trust me that's more than enough at the mo'. so if you're out there... holla back

Well, I'm a quarter-lifer

Well, I'm a quarter-lifer (will be 25 in December, in fact), but I'm also a Mommy. And let me tell you, that identity crisis doesn't abate when you have children. Instead, you find yourself swimming in a sea of, "wait a minute... I'm a MOM for chrissake, I'm supposed to be GROWN UP!" But all you really want to do is stop being responsible for everything. You want to go hang out and party. And you know what? Sometimes you do it!

A quarter-life mommy is in an especially unique place, I think, for the very things you described in your post. We still feel a little lost, a little young, wild, and reckless, and we're trying to fit in with these groups of stay-at-home mommies who are living fairly comfortably and well settled.

Let me tell you, I'm still worrying about getting prepared for my career, getting my husband into a stable one. I'm scared shitless that life is coming at me full-force and sometimes I just don't know what to do with it! Oh, and politics, class, and identity. I can hear you there.

So you're not alone, even if I'm not exactly the quarter-lifer you were looking to relate to.

Thirtysomething checking in

For many of us, the quarter-life angst doesn't stop in the twenties. I'm 32 now, and I only just feel as if I'm catching my vocational breath. But that doesn't mean I'm satisfied. There's so much I want to do with my life, but I'm not going to let motherhood (I have a 2-year-old) slow me down.

I hope, actually, never to feel completely settled. I don't know if I want to be in "crisis" mode, but I definitely want to live a dynamic life with lots of options.

Best of luck to you!
