Like most, I watched the final Presidential debate and I can’t say that I was particularly impressed or moved. My position has been solidified since February, so there’s no such thing as a game-changer for me. However, I do enjoy watching the overall sport of political debate and after all the tough “Say it to my face” talk, I was ready to see somebody get buck.
What happened, however, was that I was thoroughly disgusted by the end of the debate. And no, it was not my hard-core Democratic left-leaning sensibilities that were offended. What troubled me about the debate was John McCain’s repeated use of the term “Pro-Aborion” when referring to supporters of the Pro-Choice movement.
I am a woman, who at a point in my life, was forced to exercise my right to terminate a pregnancy. And I need to make something completely clear. There is no such position as “Pro-Abortion.”
Women who make this decision are not downing cocktails and high-fiving each other at celebratory abortion parties. This is a choice that no woman wants to have to make. It is extremely difficult and painful. No one is carrying a sign shouting “Let us kill our offspring!” We are asking for a choice. The opportunity to choose motherhood, rather than have it forced upon us by circumstance or our government. And that choice is not taken lightly, nor should it be mocked, as Senator McCain did when he belittled the consideration of the mother’s health in abortion rights.
Just as I don’t characterize all Pro-Lifers as judgmental, Bible-toting demagogues, I would rather not be characterized as a ruthless enthusiast of fetal murders. I am a woman with a choice. Who supports the right of other women to make the same choice. And I will not be demonized.
