I've finally unpacked my bags from BlogHer 07, and in doing so I'm going through all the great Swag I picked up while there. One of my favorite goodies was the AOL Body thumbdrive, not because it's particularly cool (although it is pretty), but because I have somehow lost every thumbdrive I've gotten up to now, and I needed one in the worst way.
However, I did appreciate that they didn't junk it up with a bunch of marketing crap, like I would have expected from most sponsors. It came with a small html file that simply welcomed us to BlogHer. While playing around on the AOL Body site I was pleasantly surprised to see a great looking and value-filled site that I can share with the readers of my health blog.
A few of the things I liked about the site:
- Real Women In The Pictures and Descriptions (note the image here and the suggestion that a normal Pilates workout burns 65 calories in 30 minutes for a 150 lb. woman). I'm so glad they didn't use 120 lb. woman here. Not that I hate skinny women, I envy them, but the 'norm' is nowhere near 120, and 150 makes more sense.
- Top Fatty Salads - Who knew how fattening a salad at a fast food joint could be? Shame on you Chillis!
- The BMI Page rocks - nuff said
- Cost of Smoking - As someone who is in the middle of a quit, this was a great reminder of how much money I spend lighting sticks.
A few things I didn't like:
- Pop Unders galore - Please stop covering up the content with pop-unders. Yuck...
- IM This - Seems a little nutty to think women are so into this content that they simply MUST share it immediately. I mean who is saying, "I have to let Marge know about this NOW and email is just TOO slow" LOL
- Flash attack - Could I just read the text of an article? How am I supposed to see any of this on my mobile? Each article is 10 clicks of Next to see a para of text and an image. Yes it's pretty, but too much flash still makes me think about the HTML craziness of Geocities. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Take the hint...
- Too celeb heavy - They seem intent on taking us off the Diet page and onto their celeb page at every turn. I say tone down, don't lose, the celeb attention and you'll have one rocking site.
There are many things I didn't list here that I enjoyed, and I spent probably an hour playing around, clicking through every link. However, my number one suggestion is, "Where are the recipes?" Kill the celeb overload and give us some solid calorie-cutting recipes and you've got yourself a site to be proud of...
Oh, and thanks again for the thumbdrive!
