I realize, as a political junky, I say this a lot but... has everyone in DC gone crazy?
There seems to be a recent rash of REALLY out-there remarks and ideas coming from elected officials and I'm wondering if someone spiked the water.
Today on Capitol Hill we heard Republican Representative Joe Barton APOLOGIZE to BP.
Barton condemned the White House's handling of a meeting Wednesday with BP officials, in which President Barack Obama pushed the company to create a $20 billion escrow account for damage claims from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The congressman called the account a 'slush fund.'"
After the outcry, Barton retracted his apology to BP as members of his own party condemned his remarks.
Then we have the story of Senator Orrin Hatch- Hatch wants the unemployed to take a mandatory drug test in order to get benefits.
Over at Hullabaloo the snark is overflowing,
See the only reason that someone doesn't have a job in this thriving economy is because they are drug addicts. Hatch is just trying to help.
Alright so maybe you are one of those types who doesn't believe in any sort of government hand-outs so you don't find Hatch's idea all that crazy. Then how about Tom Mullins, Congressional candidate in New Mexico.
Mullins wants land mines on our border.
Yes, you read that right. Land mines.
"The U.S. could mine the border, install barbed wire and post signs directing would-be border jumpers to cross legally at designated checkpoints. We could put land mines along the border. I know it sounds crazy. We could put up signs in 23 different languages if necessary," Republican candidate Tom Mullins said in a statement.
Not crazy enough for you yet? How an entire bill aimed at forcing women to have an ultrasound if they are raped, before they are allowed to have an abortion?
"...the state House in Louisiana passed a bill requiring women who seek an abortion to have an ultrasound first. There are no exceptions for women that have been raped or victims of incest. The bill passed 79-0 and Bobby Jindal supports the law. This law will impact low income women most because they will have to pay for both the ultrasound and the abortion. Ultrasounds can cost several hundred dollars."
Maybe it's the progressive in me, maybe I've just been reading the headlines for too long, but I honestly think some of our elected officials have lost their minds. Now maybe there are some really good reasons behind these ideas that I just can't see- help me out.
