Applications for Autistic Children

Featured Member Post

A couple of weeks ago I watched the TV show 60 Minutes, Australia and there it was this amazing reportage: First Words about autistic children who could finally express themselves using an iPad and applications by pushing simple strong visual colourful buttons and with an alphabet system to enable the child to create phrases.

Personally I don’t have children and I don’t know autistic children around me in Australia, but my friend Cathy in France has an autistic child and she told me it takes 150% of her and his partner’s time.

After watching 60 Minutes document I was amazed that technology helps people in real need. So first let me give you a short definition of autism from the WikipediaAutism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is three years old.[2] Autism affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells and their synapses connect and organize; how this occurs is not well understood.

Autistic’s parents have lots of difficulties to communicate with their own child, never knowing what their kids think or how they feel, it must be extremely hard in the everyday life and as just distressing for the kids who have no way of expressing themselves and often lash out in frustration.

Those amazing apps used on an iPad or other tablets are changing the way autistic children interact with their world, and for the first time they truly connecting with their parents.
