Applying to Irish Universities
By jessicastaton on January 03, 2012
When I pictured my son Logan going off to college next year, I comforted myself that he would come home on weekends and summers to do laundry, borrow money, and raid the fridge. Moving to Ireland complicates this vision. Logan is as excited and eager as I am to move to Ireland but there's a hitch: Only minor children under the age of 18 are eligible to move under their parent's visa or Irish Green Card.

Thankfully, Logan will be eligible to get an Irish Student Visa so long as he is accepted by an Irish University and will attend full time. Because no two points in Ireland are more than a four hour drive apart, my dreams of washing his 2 week old laundry and missing my Chinese leftovers may come true! International students can apply for their Visa online here.
Logan will be applying to University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin, and University College Cork.
University College Dublin is one of Europe's leading universities and offers the programs Logan is looking for. Today the University of Ireland is the largest university in Ireland and has excellent international programs. Trinity College Dublin ranks among the top universities of the world and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

The good news: College is free for Irish citizens, and you only have to reside in Ireland for 5 years to apply for citizenship. That means if we move this year or next Wrenn and Ellie will be eligible for free college! Woot! The bad news: Logan will not be eligible. Well, paying for only one college degree out of three is still a blessing.
A bachelor's degree in Logan's field of interest costs about 16,000 Euros per year in Ireland. That's somewhat pricier than comparable US schools but the life experience is priceless and he'll still be eligible for financial aid, scholarships, and low interest loans.
