April

April has a wonderful sound to it, and is a lovely woman’s name. If I had waited a few days, I could have begun my alphabetarium [See http://www.blogher.com/attitude ] with “A Is for April”!

No one is sure exactly how April got its name, but it may have come from the Latin word “aperire,” meaning “to open”—as in buds opening into flowers.

In April we may find the small and scattered promises of snowdrop and jonquil soon greatly overshadowed—by a vast meadow of all varieties of petals and unfurled leaves, newly awakened from winter sleep.

Open is a command the soul knows well. Our spirits, like our bodies, respond to the invitation of the natural world to behold around us the miracle of life in bloom.

What better time of year than the month of April to allow our souls also to unfold, to entertain new ideas, to seek higher fulfillments here and now? Easter thoughts center us. Spring increasingly speaks in a louder voice.

Sir Francis Bacon wrote: “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand—and melting like a snowflake.”

That is April: a transient time of new beginnings offered at this one point in the year, in the glow of fresh enchantments all around us. Why shouldn’t we all join the party? :-)

E. B. White has said, “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”

April says to us: “Seize the day … throw open your windows to tomorrow.” This is the way to begin … with all of nature observing, applauding!

“There are only two ways to live your life. One as though nothing is a miracle. The other as though everything is a miracle.”   —Albert Einstein.

“Not knowing when the dawn will come, I open every door.”  —Emily Dickinson.
