Are Americans really more Sexually old fashioned than we think?

I have been pondering this idea for a while now and possibly a few years actually. In the United States we pride ourselves on being more advanced than the rest of the world. The show Downton Abbey actually provides of with this very fact which is rather ironic considering the show is about a family in England and only shot in England.

Nevertheless at the turn of the 20th century, which is when this show begins right after Titantic sinks in 1912 to be exact. The show continues on to the 1920's and shows how much change really effected people in those days. From the start of using electricity, having phones in the house and having two seater cars with no drivers. The fashion as we know changed dramatically as well..suddenly women got to wear less bulky dresses and more sleeky tightly fitted dresses were more socially acceptable. Men starts to have different elements of their dresswear change as well. For those who don't know the show the Earl and Lady Grantham (the owners of the estate) embraced a lot of these new things. There are many funny scenes with the staff trying to figure these new things out and the Dowager Countess (Earl's mother) makes hilarious comments about these new age things coming about.  Lady Grantham in the show in the show is an American who married Lord Grantham and whose fortune actually kept their big estate called Downton a float. Lady Grantham's mother comes for a visit in the show a few times and this where you can see how the English felt about the Americans. It is also a clear message as to how much more progressively things were changing in America as opposed to England. For example in American women had the vote fully while in England only certain women could vote.  Lady Grantham's mom makes many comments about how tradition is changing and that the English need to accept that happening.  In America topics were able to be discussed anywhere that in England wouldn't have been appropriate. The clothing was getting more and more sleek.  Normal tradition with the rich and powerful were becoming more flexible and less stiff.  There is no doubt there was a time when we Americans were at the top of change ready for anything..and making other countries blush with our ambitions.

So after watching a show like Downton one might wonder why I feel we might not be as hip as we seem to think. Well it actually came to me in an episode of Bones....for those who don't know it is a show about a Forensic Anthropologist and FBI agent who worked together to solve murders. Anyhow two episodes were filmed in England and these are the episodes that got me wondering about this topic.

In the episodes Bones (Temperance Brennan, Forensic Anthropologist) is invited by another Anthropologist to talk with his students.  The man of course is handsome and dashing...obviously has no trouble with the ladies once so ever. His name is Andrew and basically he does his best to seduce Bones while she is there. His logic is you need to do it so many times in order to perfect it and get it right..sex is no different. Bones agrees..but because her partner Booth (Seeley Booth FBI) warns her against it..she declines. The next episode starts with Bones and Booth still being in England and finding out Andrew has been murdered. They are asked to stay by Andrew's partner..Agent Pritchard (Pritch) of Scotland Yard..it is joked in the episode prior that they are the English version of Bones and Booth.  While investigating Andrew death they find out that Pritch had a sexual relationship with Andrew that needed to be addressed. Pritch's response to the accusations that she could have been jealous were simply...it was all that experience Andrew had that made him so incredible in bed. Basically it seemed sex was more of how to have a good time with someone than anything else.

Now I am not saying that the British only view sex as a one night stand. Actually that is very wrong at least as far as I know. The fact is sex is valued because it is the best way to have fun and enjoy someone.  They have no need for things like titles friends with benefits or F*** buddies...why? Because there is no reason to need to justify what something is for them.  It is a decision made by two consenting adults who wanted to have fun and enjoy each other.  If they like it maybe they do it more and more...maybe they don't. Maybe it turns into a relationship or maybe it is just fun. This whole idea is what got me wondering...are we really a little more prudish and traditional than we think?
